The Wedding Present return to Bournemouth tonight for the second time in 2 years, this time serving up their seminal 1991 classic, Seamonsters in its entirety.

With legendary American rock producer, Steve Albini at the controls, the record marked a drastic change from the jangly speed pop of previous offerings and massively beefed up the power into a rougher, but beautiful racket of fuzzy guitars and hammering drums creating a wall of sound almost swallowing the vocals and marking the most compelling moment in the Wedding Present story so far...

After a handful of new songs to warm us up from the critically acclaimed, Valentina album, released last year, the all too familiar opening bars from stand out single 'Dalliance' ring out to mark the official start of the Seamonsters set.

The song starts off humbly, but gradually building and building until it hits its stride at the chorus at which point both the song and the indeed the whole album really takes off...

The next 40 minutes take us on an intense journey of swirling guitars, crashing drums, beautiful walls of noise punctuated by tales of heartbreak and alienation, stand out moments being, 'Suck', 'Heather' and closing the set, 'Octopussy'.

I guess this is not everyone’s cup of tea and the half full venue indicates a band criminally underrated, but this performance would suggest, still at the peak of their powers.

The line up has changed many times over the years since Seamonsters was released, but the live show is a truly outstanding experience and I'd recommend everyone to go and investigate their back catalogue.
