THE Manic Street Preachers once said that Snow Patrol were ‘the most boring band in Britain’.

A little harsh, but it’s easy to see how they could think that.

Talking with Snow Patrol bassist Paul Wilson, you soon find that Snow Patrol are a very down to earth bunch, without a whiff of celebrity. It’s this approachable attitude that has endeared the band to millions.

The platinum selling alternative rockers bring their long awaited UK tour to the BIC on Wednesday. Latest album Fallen Empires received widespread critical acclaim and reached number three in the album charts, with the first single from the album, Called Out In The Dark, narrowly missing out on the top 10.

However, Paul “Pablo” Wilson was already feeling the pressure of the band's busy touring schedule when we caught up with him earlier this week.

“We started our last tour in Bournemouth, so that’s a good omen. This will be our first time playing the Fallen Empires material. You worry because you’ve been playing particular songs for 10 years, but thankfully it’s been fantastic,” says Paul, 32.

It's been eight years since the group shot to mainstream fame with singles Run and Chocolate, and six albums later they've fulfilled that early potential and continued to grow into one of Britain's biggest bands. If Snow Patrol are allegedly boring, it certainly hasn’t harmed their ascendancy to major headline act.

“The new album suits bigger arena shows, but we also have these intimate small moments with new songs like The Garden Rules. There are also moments when it’s just a guitar and vocals, which are dynamic in quite an understated way.”

Singer Gary Lightbody, guitarist Nathan Connolly, bassist Paul Wilson, drummer Jonny Quinn, and keyboardist Tom Simpson recorded the new album in a variety of exotic recording studios.

“It was recorded in a house in Malibu by the beach with panoramic sea views.

“It’s amazing when you consider that we’ve recorded most our albums in a farm in Ireland.

“It was a lot more inspirational with it being hot and sunny, instead of cold and raining.”

If you don’t get the chance to see Snow Patrol next week, Paul reveals they'll be playing plenty of festivals this summer.

“We’ve got quite a few interesting festivals planned, but none in the UK yet. We’re on before Motorhead in Germany, then there’s another with The Stone Roses in Portugal. We’re also playing another one with The Cure.”

But before that there's the small matter of a largely sold out 13-date UK arena tour to negotiate.
