LITHUANIAN-born indie dance songstress Klaudia and Bournemouth-based singer songwriter Kirsty Lowless will both be appearing at Grooves on the Green festival in Poole next month after winning the latest round of The Calling. The talent contest is run by the Bournemouth Daily Echo and Grooves on the Green festival to find emerging new acts that will perform on The Calling stage hosted by Si Genaro.

Classically trained cellist Klaudia has been adapting her formal musical background to writing original folk-pop material while studying for a music degree at the University of Southampton. When she's not appearing solo or as part of a band she has also been pursuing purely vocal projects and released her first single, Raindrops of Steel, co-written with rapper Pedro Correia late last year.

“Surprisingly I've never really listened to music that sounds like I do now,” says Klaudia.

“I think because I listen to bands such as Foals, The Maccabees and Animal Collective, I never really copy a sound or style because they sound nothing like my music. I also had a classical background with cello and choir, but I believe it's beneficial to have a large soundscape. It allows you to be open-minded when it comes to creating your own music.”

A thoroughly modern musician in every sense, 16-year-old Kirsty Lowless posts new videos every Sunday on Facebook and her YouTube channel in which she sings and plays guitar, performing her own songs and other people's.

Covering artists as diverse as Rihanna, Jessie J, Ed Sheeran and The Hills, she's clearly learning all the time and last month supported hit singer Foxes on the Southampton leg of her successful attempt to set a new world record for the most number of gigs staged in 12 hours in different cities.

Both will be appearing on The Calling Stage at Grooves on the Green, hosted by the irrepressible Si Genaro whose two appearances in two seasons on BBC's The Voice are among the show's most memorable moments. He describes himself as a “singer-songwriter guitarist-harmonica madman and human drum machine” and has supported David Essex, Nizlopi, InMe, The Mad Professor and Jamelia, among others.

Grooves on the Green runs from noon until 7pm on 11 and 12 July at Ashley Cross Green with music on two stages, a local beer and food festival, kidzone and mini film festival. Now in its 15th year, £1 from every ticket sold is donated to Diverse Abilities Plus, which helps children and adults in Dorset who live with profound disability.
