It's not often a first-person-shooter drops a story based outside your typically comfy western civilisation, so the Metro series is a fresh slap across the face for the genre.

Following the action from Metro 2033, which recounts post-apocalyptic doings of a host of Russian survivors forced into their dilapidated underground transport system, Last Night picks up with our protagonist Artyom tripping off into the nest of the mysterious Dark Ones.

Long of arm and bereft of face, the Dark Ones feed off the overground's plump supply of radiation and appear to enjoy the taste of Russian survivor.

As is typically the case with FPS games, story is everything, and Last Night conjures a suitably dank, desperate atmosphere paired with a compelling mystery. The snappy graphics and music help too, obviously.

It's annoyingly linear at times but you're stupid enough to pick up a shooter expecting an open-world sandbox experience, you deserve all you get.
