A CHARMING knitted nativity scene is about to go on display at a Bournemouth library.

A core group of four members of the Kinson and West Howe knitting group spent a year crafting all the major characters and even some knitted animals.

They have now been placed in a custom-made cardboard stable produced by Annie Vacher and will be unveiled at West Howe library’s carol service at 10.30am on Monday.

Jane McLaughlin, assistant manager at the library, had set the group the challenge of producing a knitted nativity for them to use in their Christmas card.

“I also thought it would be nice for children to have something that they could pick up and touch, rather than just something to be looked at,” she said.

“We are absolutely delighted with the result, I was actually very moved to see how much work had been put into it over the course of a year.”

The knitting group, which meets at both West Howe and Kinson libraries every week, takes on various community projects, including producing knitted items for Cherry Tree Nursery, knitting scarves, hats and gloves for the homeless and even teddies for premature babies.
