YATES came out on top during Bournemouth's Best Bar None awards - which celebrate the town's pub, club and live venue scene.

The Dean Park Crescent premises received the overall winner award for the second time in the award's 10 year history, during a ceremony at Bournemouth's Cameo & Myu club.

More than 100 people attended the black tie event, which included a three-course dinner.

Also winning in their categories were the O2 Academy, for live music and arts; The Grove Tavern, for community venue; and Bar So & 1812 for best independent venue.

Cameo & Myu took the spoils for the bar and club category, leaving For Your Eyes Only to win best adult entertainment venue.

Bournemouth's Best Bar Awards are sponsored by the town centre's Business Improvement District (BID), and one of the awards is the Daily Echo Editor's Award. This year it was presented to the Old Fire Station.

Town Centre BID manager Roger Parker said: "We are delighted to sponsor this award and are always very supportive of Bournemouth's night time economy, which always makes a great commitment to the town and is a vital part of the town's economical future."

The event was hosted by the town's night time economy co-ordinator, John Shipp. Bournemouth Mayor Cllr Lawrence Williams also attended and made a speech during the evening, which took place last Wednesday. (SEPT 6)

Best Bar None, a national award scheme supported by the Home Office and the drinks industry, is primarily aimed at promoting responsible management and operation of alcohol licensed premises.

Since the scheme's pilot launch, in Manchester in 2003, it has been adopted by 75 towns and cities across the UK.

A scheme spokesman said: "Our mission statement is to reduce alcohol-related crime and anti-social behaviour, to increase business - through the delivery of training, education and promotion of best practice - and to create a partnership between the local authority, the police, the trade and the private sector to broaden the appeal of an area especially its evening and nighttime economy."
