SCOTT Mitchell marched into the semi-final of the BDO World Championship at Lakeside with a series of inspired ton-plus checkouts to see off plucky outsider Brian Dawson.

Dorset’s darts talisman landed two finishes of 142 en route to a consummate 5-2 victory over his Rotherham-based rival.

In-form Mitchell will now face the winner of tournament-favourite Robbie Green’s clash with Canadian Jeff Smith as he bids to scoop the global crown and £100,000 prize money.

Dawson started well with the throw but Mitchell turned the screw with 136 before breaking his opponent’s throw with a 14-dart finish on double 16.

With the darts, ‘Scotty Dog’ kept his opponent at arm’s length and survived missing three darts at double 16 before seeing off Dawson at the fourth attempt.

Dawson missed a shot at bull to save the first set and Mitchell took full advantage, moving in front by landing his first arrow.

The duo went toe-to-toe at the start of the second but Mitchell held to take a fourth straight leg with a composed bull and double-16 checkout.

A 100 outshot saw Dawson finally get on the board and number-four seed Mitchell laboured in holding his throw.

But the favourite bounced back with confidence, hitting a 142 checkout with a pair of treble 20s before placing his final dart plum in the middle of the double 11 bed.

The Bransgore-based ace ratcheted up the pressure with his first 180 at the start of the third and checked out with 126 to register another leg against the darts.

But Dawson refused to lie down and threatened to turn the tie on its head with three back-to-back legs, the last with a 90 checkout to get back into the contest at 2-1 in sets.

All of a sudden, Dawson looked a different player but Mitchell stood up to the challenge with a two 140s in a row before hitting a 12-dart finish with a 121 checkout on the bull.

Mitchell then proved his ton-plus finishes had been no flash in the pan with a repeat of his 142 to seize control of the fourth, with a further a double 16 making it 3-1 ahead of the interval.

After the break, Mitchell won another leg against the throw by landing double 12, a first-time shot that took to 71 per cent his doubles ratio in the match.

Undeterred, Dawson hit straight back with a finish on the bull and a double top dealt Mitchell another blow before Mitchell hit double 10.

But Dawson held his nerve and rattled home a 180 before surviving a wobble to hit double 16 and halve the deficit to 3-2.

The duelling duo shared 180s but Mitchell missed double 18 and double nine before recovering to hold his throw on his 17th dart of the opening leg of the sixth.

Both men did their best to throw away the third leg but Mitchell eventually planted home double five, only for Dawson to hit back.

But in the sixth-set decider, Mitchell made no mistake and pulled another special out of the bag with a 25, treble 19 and bull chalking off a 132 to take a 4-2 lead.

The game was up for Dawson as Mitchell went into overdrive, checking out 129 to complete a 15-dart finish before taking a leg against the darts with an 11-darter on double 12 to rapturous applause.

From there, Mitchell cruised home to land at least £15,000 in prize money and a last-four clash tomorrow afternoon.
