BLACKBURN boss Gary Bowyer accused Adam Smith of taking a dive to win a penalty during Cherries’ 3-2 defeat at Ewood Park on Saturday.

However, Cherries manager Eddie Howe strenuously refuted Bowyer’s claim when he insisted Smith was “not that kind of player”.

The incident occurred when Smith went to ground under a challenge from Rovers’ on-loan defender Alex Baptiste nine minutes from time and with Cherries trailing 3-0.

Referee Geoff Eltringham had no hesitation in pointing to the spot before substitute Brett Pitman fired home the penalty to throw Cherries a lifeline.

Bowyer said: “They pushed us all the way but they had a helping hand, massively, by yet another penalty which was not a penalty. The lad clearly dived, there was no contact at all and he gave a penalty.

“We kept them at bay and we didn’t let them back into the game. The referee’s decision, which was wrong, let them back into the game.

“It was a fantastic win for us. They are a very good team with a very good manager and a very good way of playing. They will be up there.”

Baptiste, on loan to Rovers from Bolton, added: “I didn’t touch the lad and it said something that their players were laughing at the decision.”

Cherries boss Howe, asked by the Daily Echo for his opinion of the incident at his post-match press conference, said: “One thing I am not going to do is criticise my player before I have seen the incident again. I need to see it before making an assessment.

“Adam Smith is not that kind of player. I thought he was on the wrong end of a decision in the first half when the referee thought he had gone down too easily.

“For me, it was a 50-50 call. It didn’t look a blatant penalty but I have seen them given so let me have a look at it again.”

Smith may or may not have dived but equally the foul by Fryatt on Smith in scoring Forest's second goal was not given. Sadly referees are not as good as we would all hope.

Smith may or may not have dived but equally he was fouled for the second Forest goal and this foul was not given. Sadly referees are not as good as we would wish.

Just watched the penalty incident a couple of times on iplayer. I have to agree with Gary Bowyer as it was a clear dive. Come on Eddie, let's cut this out, it does a discredit to the team.

Further, I note that Blackburn's 2nd goal may have been prevented by a more imposing presence on the left post. Possibly the 3rd goal in the week where this was he case. Great as Smith was going forward on Tuesday, his first priority is in defence. IMO we have greatly missed SF this last week.

What does Francis do ? stay back all the time.
Rubbish comment.
Its up to others to cover their position when the backs go forwad.
Worrying you got 7 thumbs up for that comment. shows how many thick supporters we got.

I think he was referring to the fact that Francis would have been the more imposing presence required at the left post, which certainly is the case. Worrying how thick you are. Smith does lack height at the posts and is also much weaker than Francis.
In relation to this article, Smith does tend to go down an awful lot so its not too much of a surprise that he went down very easily for the penalty.

I have to agree with Bowyer i dont like it, Smith is a cheating diver.......anyone who went to Exeter could tell you that, as he did an outrageous dive there, if he's not careful he will get a reputation just like Ashley young has now got. If the shoe was on the other foot then we wouldnt like it so it should be stamped out by EH and JT, before it becomes a problem. His form has massively improved so no ned to do it

Smith was a bit theatrical, sure. But we were by far and away the best side on Saturday apart from some naive defending early on from Cookie. Learn from it and move on. Hopefully someone will nobble money grabbing on Saturday and we'll get three unlikely points.

Next up... Carlton Cole in, Pitman and Rantie out.
