AFC Bournemouth: Wolves linked with defender Steve Cook

Bournemouth Echo: SPECULATION: Cherries defender Steve Cook SPECULATION: Cherries defender Steve Cook

CHERRIES have reportedly opened talks with Steve Cook over a new deal in a bid to fend off interest from a host of Premier League and Championship clubs.

News that the Dean Court outfit had been hoping to tempt the sought-after defender with improved terms was revealed yesterday by Sky Sports.

The 23-year-old has already been linked with Burnley, Crystal Palace, West Brom, Fulham and Norwich while Wolves are also believed to be among his suitors.

Reports in the Midlands today suggested Molineux boss Kenny Jackett had turned his attentions to Cook after being resigned to missing out on Sheffield United’s Harry Maguire.

The Express & Star in Wolverhampton claimed Wolves were “weighing up a seven-figure bid” for Cook, a player the newspaper rated at £2million.

Cook, who is under contract to Cherries until 2016, turned in a succession of eye-catching performances as Eddie Howe’s men finished 10th in the Championship last season.

A £170,000 signing from Brighton in January 2012, Cook penned a new contract just 12 months ago before going on to star in only his second full season as a professional.

In an interview with the Daily Echo last month, Cook said: “I think it is inevitable that some of our players will be linked with other clubs after the excellent season we have had. Bournemouth has always attracted interest from other clubs and you only have to see how many players have left in the past.

“But times have changed now and I don’t see any reason why the club would need to sell players because it is only going in one direction.

“There is always going to be speculation but, whether anything happens or not, is yet to be seen. As a player, you want to perform well in every game and you want to impress. If you do that and it gets you linked with higher-level clubs then it is flattering.

“The manager has said we should take it as a compliment and, from my perspective, I do. But everyone in this squad wants to play in the Premier League and, hopefully, it can be for this club. It is every boy’s dream to play in the top flight and we want to be pushing for promotion next season.”

Unlike Grabban, I'd be gutted to lose Cook. Were the worst to happen and he leaves, at least let it be a Premier club. Wolves isn't even a sideways step and wouldn't exactly show ambition. But I don't actually see Cook or anyone else leaving, there is too much good going on here, and I'm sure they'd all want to be a part of it. Expect several to get improved contracts though!!! UTCIAD

the club are in a difficult position, whilst I suspect they would like to receive the money should they sell him it would be difficult to convince the home fans that they are as progressive a club as they would like us to think

The bottom line is that AFCB is a small club. If any of our players have the option to move on to big club for very good money you can't really stand in their way provided the club receive an adequate fee that will allow EH to bring in suitable replacements. I hope Cook doesn't leave of course, but if he does I wish him well and thanks for being a top player for us. UTCIAD!

I can’t believe for the life of me why you have a handful of thumbs downs for that comment and totally agree with you!! We need players like Cookie to believe in the vision and give us at least one more season. It’s good for the club, good for the supporters and good our chances next season, improved contracts will have to be the clubs part in achieving this, I just hope it doesn’t cause any rifts.

Totally agree. If 2 or 3 go, it doesn't look great to the rest of the squad, nor the supporters, keep them together, and we'll be a hell of a force this coming season, which begs the question, why with improved contracts, wouldn't any of them want to give one good go, and see where it ends up?? After all, I'd of thought it would be fantastic to be a part of what's going on at AFCB, they've all had a wonderful last couple of years!!! UTCIAD

Thank you, but people can give me as many thumbs down as they like, it really doesn't bother me. I'm not afraid to speak my mind, I've never been one to follow the crowd, and right or wrong I stand by my comments. I'll also hold my hands up if ever proved wrong, and yes, it does happen LOL...

I would hate to lose Cookie, but why would anyone think that Wolves would be a sideways step or worse? Surely everyone would acknowledge they are a far bigger club than we are, bigger stadium, more fans, higher attendances, have played regularly in the top division and championship apart from last season, I would assume they pay higher wages than we do too, can't see why anyone would think different cos we have had one good season in the championship

Certainly a bigger club in terms of fan base and size of ground, not better in terms of manager and team, and I suspect our facilities are close to being as good as many for our players!!! If we can keep everyone together, we'll end up higher than Wolves, so it doesn't make sense to me going to Wolves, therefore worse than a sideways step, except wages of possibly!!

Don't get me wrong, I am confident that if we keep the players together and add a few quality signings we will have a real go next season and more teams will be below us than above us, I don't think that any club in the championship has a manager that I would swap for Eddie, when I say wolves are a bigger club I mean it is a game that we will all look forward to next season home&away, I wonder how many Wolves fans think the same of us, apart from coming down to see the sun!!!!!!!

I as a Wolves honestly think this a false rumour. We have recently renewed our centre half Richard Stearman. I've read a few comments on saying about why would he go to Wolves. Well to be honest i love how the feeling towards wolves because we will surprise a lot of people next season. we have a better squad than we had in the premier league our squad is clearly playing for a play off place next season. We've seen it before using the momentum from going up from League 1 with Norwich & Southampton and to an extent yourselves but you fell short unfortunately at the end of the season. Wolves are huge club compared to yourselves but that don't make our club better than yous. but we do have a great academy one of the best training grounds in the country and a fantastic following to average over 20000 in league 1 with how the clubs gone through double dip relegation is applaudable and away support is phenomenal taking 8,800 to Mk will live long in my memory

On the other hand i really do like AFCB my teacher when i went to school was a Bournemouth fan and i've always had a keen interest in yourselves and was gutted when you messed it up vs Sheff Weds at home . i would say Eddie Howe is a quality manager and probably the only one i would consider over Kenny. A very Good away day if on a Saturday and hope you can sell your allocation AT Molineux and hoping both games are not on a Tuesday night. You've got some very good players but with you selling Grabban it must question your ambition.

Anyway all the best for next season , i predict and hope wolves and AFCB are both in the play offs next season!!

Thanks for you measured contribution you have done your club proud. We appreciate a bit of respect on here and you’ve shown and will get it in return. Makes a change from the dispirited numpties we get on here from Swindle, Poopey & Scummers, though to be fair to those clubs I’m sure they’re misrepresented by these lonely trolls. Look forward to the Wolves games and await the fixture list tomorrow, have a good season, but not too good eh! ;-}

How are Wolves a sideways step, they have a larger ground, more fans, more money and have played in the Premiership in the past few years, yes they have been down in League 1 but dont see them as a sideways step.
