Grabban and Elphick inspire Howe's men

Bournemouth Echo: SCORER: Lewis Grabban SCORER: Lewis Grabban

GOALS from Tommy Elphick and Lewis Grabban earned Cherries a famous victory over Championship high-fliers QPR as Eddie Howe’s men ruined Harry Redknapp’s homecoming.

Elphick opened the scoring on the stroke of half-time with a thumping header before Grabban bagged his 20th of the season to keep alive Cherries’ chances of reaching the play-offs.

Armand Traore’s finely-taken goal seconds after the restart put the visitors on level terms before Harry Arter saw red for a lunge on Junior Hoilett.

Andrew Surman was restored to the starting line-up as boss Eddie Howe made one change following Cherries’ 4-2 win at Birmingham seven days ago.

Cherries striker Yann Kermorgant and QPR skipper Clint Hill both required treatment following a nasty clash of heads after just 10 seconds with the contest held up for around four minutes.

Lee Camp was the first goalkeeper called into action, the Cherries stopper diving to his left to superbly claw away a long-range effort from Jermaine Jenas after 16 minutes.

Camp then clutched a speculative strike from Benoit Assou-Ekotto before Cherries striker Lewis Grabban’s low drive was blocked by a defender.

As QPR made most of the early running, Ravel Morrison’s shot was helped over the crossbar by Camp before Matt Ritchie’s 20-yarder flashed narrowly past the upright.

Shots from Grabban and Marc Pugh were both charged down as Cherries began to find their feet and only a smart save from Rob Green prevented the hosts from taking the lead after 36 minutes.

A sweeping move down the left started by Surman ended with Green beating away Kermorgant’s first-time strike after Grabban had picked him out with a precision cross.

Grabban’s left-foot strike flew just past the post after Richard Dunne had made a dog’s dinner of trying to defend a mule-like clearance from Camp on the stroke of half-time.

Elphick nodded Cherries into the lead in first-half stoppage time when he careered through a posse of players to meet Harte’s corner with an unstoppable header from six yards.

Traore levelled just 20 seconds after the break when he neatly controlled a crossfield pass from Tom Carroll and lifted a left-foot shot past Camp from a tight angle.

Surman went close to restoring Cherries’ lead when he started and finished a flowing move, his resultant shot from just inside the 18-yard box tipped over the crossbar by Green.

Grabban turned in the loose ball to make it 2-1 after 59 minutes, the striker reacting quickly after Kermorgant’s cross from Surman’s sublime through ball had found its way to him at the far post.

Green was forced to parry Arter’s pot-shot before the Cherries midfielder received a straight red card for a tackle on Hoilett after 70 minutes.

Kermorgant was immediately sacrificed and replaced by Eunan O’Kane before Ritchie then made way with Ryan Fraser coming on after 74 minutes.

Hoilett traded passes with Austin before lifting a shot over the crossbar, while Green saved with his knees from Grabban after Fraser had sent him clear in the last minute.

Green had to tip Harte’s blistering free kick over the crossbar in the second minute of added time before Brett Pitman came off the bench to clear off the line from Dunne in the dying seconds.

Cherries: Camp, Francis, Cook, Elphick, Harte, Ritchie (Fraser, 74), Surman, Arter, Pugh (Pitman, 90), Grabban, Kermorgant (O’Kane, 70).

BRILLIANT WIN! What a substitution made by Eddie Howe, in Pitman. His only touch of the game, heading it off the line to deny them scoring in last few seconds! Huge credit to the players, put in a real shift despite having 10 men!

You're absolutely right, Yann is the difference, the sort of player many of us said we needed. He brings others into play, besides scoring himself. GREAT team effort. A game that could of gone either way, yet I feel we were well worth the points. I wasn't surprised Arter was sent off, but would like to see it again. Draw breath, and gather myself together for Tuesday night and BELIEVE everyone, it really could happen!!! UTCIAD

Best performance so far, difficult to name a man of the match, they all put in a shift with quality all over the pitch. Camp kept us in it with 2 great saves and from there we went on to match the multi- million pound team from London. I think Surman is earning himself a contract for next season with his current form. Great afternoon. Up the cherries!

Excellent result. Well done AFCB!.
.
Yes I did have a little jig in the car park at Chesterfield. A rather interesting storey to tell - I wanted to leave the ground 10 minutes early as I had got everything i needed as far as Chesterfield's game plan was concerned. So walked up he this 'gargoyle' of a female steward to ask her to let me out - I did say please. Se replied that he cold not open the gate until the final whistle !!??
.
I uttered for 'Duck''s sake under my breath. She then retorted that if I swore again she would throw me out.
.
So I asked her why she would not let me out by asking politely, but would let me out, albeit throw me out, if I swore.!!! Needless to say there as no answer. Th same thing happened at Notts County a few years ago.
.
I am sure there was some sense in this somewhere!!

Thank you AFCB for making my day!!.

Well I enjoyed that on the edge of my seat near the end, I think the only reason Arter went because he had a done a similar challenge prior to that even the QPR lad got out of the way the ref had to speak to Harry, so the card my seem harsh but he was warned. I also thought Fraser was the last man went Dunn chopped him down, but hey does it matter, bring on Reading on Tuesday , a good win there predicted. Ipswich and Notts forest will be massive games

Th same thing happened at Notts County a few years ago. . I am sure there was some sense in this somewhere!! . Thank you AFCB for making my day!!. . We beat a team put together at vast cost and with a hugely experienced Manager. We leveled up the points on all but one of the teams we are looking to catch. We didn't lose ground on Reading on a day when we were playing a top team and they were playing a relegation threatened team. Other than that, perhaps we didn't achieve much...what a pathetic comment.

Apart from the first 20 minutes of the 1st half and the first 30 seconds of the 2nd half, we took the game to QPR and came out on top. A quality performance by everyone involved. The match, team work and result left me with a great sense of pride.

Harry Arter's red card was more than harsh. Watching from abroad I was able to see instant re plays. He slid in with one foot low on the ground, it was studs up and he came in hard but he took the ball before crashing into the player. Eddie was right that he didn't really need to make the challenge considering it was in the middle of the pitch but he is a commited player. Take his commitment away and you lose Harry Arter. Worth an appeal in my opinion. Might open the door for MacDonald though.

Nice last sentence from 'Arry in the video. Roll on Tuesday. It would be nice to pay Reading back for 2001!

Wrong about the huge cost, it's a popular misconception, most of our players are on loan which explains why we tend to play as Queens Park Strangers most games.
Anyway, well done Cherries, deserved result (even if our former keeper kept you in the game in the first twenty minutes), hope you make the playoffs.
.....then we can beat you at Wembley!

So little time,so much to say, keep it brief;-nice to see so many smiles leaving the ground, also nice to see the entire team once again come together to congratulate and celebrate TE`s goal, the team ethic EH has instilled seems to be paying off.
Just caught up on a couple of things;the stats, even though they show that QPR had slightly more possession the other stats overall show we were better.Secondly,HA`s red card,at the time it didn`t look that bad, watched it several times and in retrospect it is probably a harsh decision(it wasn`t two-footed,off the ground and studs showing),especially given some of the tackles(fouls)that were inflicted on our team that weren`t even penalised.

Like I have already stated the ref had previously verbally warned Arter for a similar tackle earlier on in the game, it seems that the verbal warning was indeed a invisable yellow card

That is silly comment of the week. I have an early flight in 6 hours but had to log on to respond.

DO YOU REALISE HOW FAR WE HAVE COME?

This is a mighty charge up the table. Were you there early doors when we played Watford? Have we not improved? Are we not higher than that particular team that taught us a lesson? We have learned and responded. We must win otherwise our season is over? Would you rather we were Charlton? Down with the Luton Town perhaps? They are flying tin that particular league.

Don't knock our boys and the fans. We are celebrating the fact that we are competing against the best. Harry bless him, cause he is our legend too, must be worrying about the boot after this results. I can just imagine him on Monday having to explain this loss. He will be honest we are one of the best at this moment in time. So for gawds sakes don't knock our team. If we lose on Tuesday then its been a great season and not the end as you describe.
I wish I was there it will be a great match and why can't we just enjoy this run of form and give them a huge cheer? I always hoped that we might get near the play offs. Well we are close to that.

Marvellous! Up the Cherries! I can't even knock After, he is young and he will learn!

Grabban was man of the match for me. When Arter got sent off Grabban played like 2 players he was all over the pitch and getting onto and winning every long ball and clearance, as well as having the energy and fitness to sprint past their defenders with his pace and strength.
The whole team was excellent, the defence are always in the right position and were like a wall that was impossible to break down. Pitman won us 2 points with that header and fair play to him sprinting back to the goal line as soon as he came on.
Surman showed why howe has so much faith in him and Ian Harte was immense. The unsung hero in our team is Marc Pugh, who was getting unfair stick at the start of the season.
My final point is Arter should go round to all the other lads and say "I owe you on", because his challenge was reckless and made it a lot harder for the other lads with a numerical disadvantage and a ref who was on QPR's side.
Great win, if we don't finish in the top 6 this season, we are certainly heading in the right direction improving all the time and we can at least look forwards to a good few years at this level with our current squad, management, chairman and owner. I couldn't be happier with any of people involved at our club and I am enjoying our best season in the thirty years I've been a Bournemouth fan.

Always thought it was going to be a very hard earned victory, and so it proved to be. QPR played some decent football but without really hurting us. Our defence looks really solid now, expertly marshalled by captain Elphick of course. These players seem to have developed a steely belief, and that makes us a very formiddable apponant. So looking forward to tuesday where hopfullythere will be another sell-out, the players deserve all the support we can give them. Dig in comrades.!!!

You are a very clever, bright shiny star Eddie Howe. I bow to you wisdom and decency as a person.

I purposely said huge cost not huge fees. True I don't have the figures but I suspect Morrison, Barton, Austin (who, although not disclosed, probably cost you about the same amount as our whole squad), Traore, Green, Benayoun, Zamora, Redknapp etc. etc. don't come cheap in the wages department! I'm wasn't and am not having a dig by the way (clubs spend what they think makes sense) but was just pointing out part of what we achieved to somebody who clearly felt we hadn't achieved anything....I've always found QPR to be an entertaining club, they have a Bournemouth legend as Manager (and a not-so legend as one of his assistants!) and I'm really looking forward to that Wembley date!...

he got the ball fair & square & it wasn't two footed either. do you want the game to be a 'non-contact' sport coz that's the way it will go if you call a fair ball winning takle 'reckless'?

Kevin Bond was our manager at a really difficult time for our club, whoever was in charge at that time would of found it difficult so don't give him any stick, under different circumstances he may of been our manager for longer, as far as I'm concerned Bondy is always welcome at Dean Court and although you describe him as not a legend he is someone who loves Afcb and that's good enough for me

Back in August/September, it looked doubtful whether quite a few were actually up to the task, we really were scratching out results, and a couple of thrashings were not a surprise. But this is where Eddie is absolutely brilliant, he's nurtured the whole squad into a formidable force, and players who I had question marks over, are absolutely outstanding now, so much so, there is no weak link as such. Anyone can come in and do a job. In fairness, QPR did show some real quality at times, but where exactly did it get them. They did their best to try and stop us playing our game, but we won, and it could of been by more, so this was no fluke. Hope the ground is rocking as much Tuesday evening, and that my voice is ready to give it plenty again!!! UTCIAD

I think you will find that Austin was put on to wind him up ( as well as try and steal a goal) as he was niggling Harry from his first step onto the pitch, the odd nudge and a kick which I think did the job in winding him up enough to make a rash challenge. I've not seen the replay yet but my initial remark to my son was ''he's off here''. Would Redknapp have used his knowledge of Arters temperament in this way? You betcha!
Also the QPR fans sat next to us in block 1 seemed to enjoy the game and thought we were good enough to go into the play-offs!

I've not seen the replay yet but my initial remark to my son was ''he's off here''. Would Redknapp have used his knowledge of Arters temperament in this way? You betcha! I recorded the Football League Show and I looked at the tackle frame by frame Arter definitely got the ball way before the player. I know that the ref would not have had that facility but if EH appeals, whoever is responsible for the appeal should look at the video evidence and repeal the red card. I have seen pigs fly before now!!!!! However to be fair looking at it with a naked eye and for the first time I have to say that it looked careless.

Thanks for That, thought I had the FL Show recording but after deleting the jpt final h/lights my sky box stopped the series link so will have to wait till it's on demand to view. Hopefully they will see sense if it's chased by AFCB.
