AFC Bournemouth: Marathon man Francis ready to go the distance

Bournemouth Echo: MARATHON MAN: Simon Francis MARATHON MAN: Simon Francis

MARATHON man Simon Francis is vowing to see off any potential challengers to his position as he looks to go the distance with Cherries.

The dependable right-back knows Eddie Howe may look to draft in reinforcements to keep his team competitive during the second half of the season.

And while Francis may have firmly established himself as a regular under the Cherries boss, he is also aware there is no room for complacency.

An exemplary attendance record has seen Francis miss only three games - starting and finishing 106 out of 109 - after making his Cherries debut in an FA Cup clash against Gillingham in November 2011.

Francis, who is in line to make his 59th consecutive appearance at Wigan tomorrow, told the Daily Echo: “Although there is probably not another natural right-back waiting to play, there are players who could step in if I wasn't performing and I don't think the manager would hesitate to do that. You have to be ruthless as a manager and I wouldn't expect anything different.

“We haven't got the biggest squad in the league and I think the manager will be looking to strengthen in the window. We want to go as high as we can and we have to have a big squad to do that. You need to be able to rotate and players who come need to be equally as good as the ones who are starting.

“Although we have a lot of ability in the team, you have to have strength in depth in the Championship. If the manager brings in another right-back then so be it. I will just have to keep working hard and try to keep the shirt. All I can do is perform to my best in every game.”

Francis, who initially joined Cherries on loan from Charlton, took his place on the bench and was an unused sub during a 6-0 defeat at Brentford in the JPT just hours after he had signed.

He then made 40 consecutive appearances before injury ruled him out against Swindon and Walsall in September 2012. He last missed a game some 14 months ago and has never been suspended during his time at the club.

The 28-year-old added: “I have been fortunate enough to play every game this season and have enjoyed it. There is an element of luck but I would like to think I live correctly off the pitch which, as you get older, you have to do more.

“When I was 18 or 19, I could probably eat what I wanted and maybe train how I wanted. I was relatively fortunate with injuries then. Now though, if you don't do it right off the pitch then you are going to suffer. I work before and after training and try to eat correctly. That has definitely played a big part.”

Simon may have his critics but I’m not one of them. He has been an integral team member and as shown has an impressive appearance record for us. His attitude shows he is a serious professional too.

Must’ve been a bit of a shock signing up and then playing in “that” Brentford game! Despite being stuffed by Brentford it wasn’t all bad by any means. I still remember every Cherry totally defiant, singing right to the end and Supa running up to us after the game pumping his heart, quite a proud moment really and couldn’t fault our support.

I think Simon has improved this season, especially when Yennaris arrived (it seemed to give him a kick up the backside). I still believe that we need another RB if we are going to push on and become a real championship force.

We don't seem too close to bringing anyone in at present, as Eddie ( as honest as ever) said this morning, there's only a small pool of players available,, a lot of Club's looking to strengthen and the price wanted refects that - ie over valued! Loans may be the way forward. We do seem too to be having difficulty in finding Club's willing to take our "fringe" players, possibly the over generous salaries Tom dished out? are the major factor there, because there are several who would do a great job in a lower league and who really need to be playing on a regular basis. Pleased to see young Jayden joining Hargreaves at Torquay, it will do him the world of good to be playing compettitve football under some one that knows him so well...

it is good to see Jayden getting another chance on Loan but he needs to play or there is a big danger that his talent will be lost to the game, if we are going to have a devolment side with a manager paid to run them I would prefer to see them have a full programme of matches rather than sending lhalf of the squad ou on loans that do not seem to bring the players any closer to our first team squad

Inclined to agree with you, don't believe that a series of hastily arranged "friendlies" advances them, but a reserve team , playing in a proper league does seem unfashionable these days. There's the cost too.

Frances has made a solid step up to championship standard and we are lucky to have him. Haven't seen a better right back in any of our opponents. Hope he stays injury free for the rest of the season. Up the cherries!

Simon Francis has proved to be a very solid, dependable right back who likes to get forward at every opportunity to support our right side midfield. However should he get injured and be out for any length of time, we do not have a recognised right back as cover. Cookie or Hughes could cover in the short term and EH was looking at Foggy becoming a full back (?). Failing that I suppose Ritchie could cover but IMO that would be a waste of his talents, so EH may look to strengthen that position in the transfer window.

Good luck to the lads today at Wigan, I wish them well. It will be a great result if they can come away with a point today and 3pts bearing how well Wigan have been playing since Rossler took over as manager, would be a tremendous result and a clear indication of how far the club has come. UTC.
