AFC Bournemouth: Pitman makes a point for impressive Cherries

Bournemouth Echo: EQUALISER: Brett Pitman EQUALISER: Brett Pitman

SUBSTITUTE Brett Pitman struck a second-half equaliser as dominant Cherries were held to a 1-1 draw in an entertaining clash at Dean Court this afternoon.

After weathering an early storm from the visitors, Cherries impressed and had the opportunities to have claimed a notable scalp against the play-off contenders.

Ryan Fraser fired wide early on before Ipswich’s star man, keeper Dean Gerken, denied Lewis Grabban with a brilliant block before the break.

Cherries were made to pay for missing their chances when Daryl Murphy converted a Frank Nouble cross to get the Tractor Boys motoring.

However, Cherries fought back and substitutes Marc Pugh and Pitman combined to put the hosts level. Pugh’s cross was headed back into the mix by Matt Ritchie and when Gerken could only parry Andrew Surman’s drive, Pitman lashed home from six yards.

Gerken again enhanced his reputation by saving from Surman in the closing stages as Ipswich shut up shop in the face of more Cherries pressure late on.

With Harry Arter suspended and Shaun MacDonald understood to have failed a late fitness test, Josh McQuoid made his first start of the season in a central midfield role.

Ipswich, who arrived unbeaten in six and on the back of just one defeat in their past 10 matches, included former Cherries loan star David McGoldrick up front.

After registering three wins out of four, Cherries were also in decent form going into a game which represented the halfway stage in their league season.

Ipswich made a very bright start and forced a series of corners, testing Cherries’ defensive resolve with some dangerous deliveries.

Having restricted the visitors to long-range shots from McGoldrick and Nouble, Cherries steadily settled and then dominated for long periods with impressive forward play.

Comeback man McQuoid was heavily involved in creating the hosts’ first opening. The 24-year-old showed sharp pace and good awareness to send Lewis Grabban clear on the right. And when the striker’s cutback found Ryan Fraser 12 yards out, the Scotsman’s goalbound shot was brilliantly blocked by Ipswich captain Luke Chambers.

Fraser again went close when the winger latched on to Aaron Cresswell’s wayward clearance, only to slice wide when well placed.

Ipswich keeper Gerken recovered well to tip wide after Eunan O’Kane’s floated cross-shot had almost embarrassed the stopper. From the corner, Gerken was alert to gather a low Simon Francis shot.

Gerken continued to impress and it took an exceptional save from the keeper to deny Grabban on 35 minutes. Found by a fine Ritchie pass, Surman scampered clear and delivered a sublime backheel to put Grabban clean through, only for Gerken to race off his line, narrow the angle and bravely block.

It was now all Cherries and centre-half Tommy Smith was next to prevent a Grabban goal as he produced a last-gasp intervention after Fraser had delivered a pinpoint far-post cross following fine midfield work by Surman.

Tommy Elphick and Elliott Ward launched themselves in front of Luke Hyam’s shot to ensure the teams went in level at the interval.

Gerken comfortably saved Grabban’s low left-foot shot as Cherries attempted to maintain their momentum after the break.

But Cherries were punished for not converting their chances when Ipswich went ahead on 59 minutes. Murphy finished clinically from close range after timing his run to meet Nouble’s precision cross from the right.

Boss Eddie Howe wasted no time in making changes and he introduced Pitman for McQuoid.

The lively Fraser forced Gerken into a diving save before Pugh replaced the teenage winger. And Pugh had an immediate impact when he played a major role in Cherries’ equaliser. His deep left-wing cross was headed back into the danger area by Ritchie and when the loose ball found its way to Surman, his fierce drive was parried by Gerken into the path of Pitman, who made no mistake from close range.

With the hosts and their supporters buoyant, Cherries were celebrating again moments later when Gerken spilled the ball into his own net, only for referee Phil Gibbs to interrupt the party by awarding a foul for a push.

Gerken saved Surman’s dipping volley before comfortably holding Elphick’s close-range effort, with Grabban then failing to test the stopper with a header as Ipswich held on.

Cherries: (4-1-4-1) Camp; Francis, Elphick, Ward, Daniels; O’Kane; Ritchie, McQuoid (Pitman, 60), Surman, Fraser (Pugh, 73); Grabban.

Unused subs: Addison, Harte, Hughes, Thomas, Allsop (g/k).

Ipswich: (4-3-3) Gerken; Chambers, Berra, Smith, Cresswell; Hyam, Skuse, Tunnicliffe; Nouble (Taylor, 76), McGoldrick (Mings, 87), Murphy.

Unused subs: Tabb, Edwards, Anderson, Graham, Loach (g/k).

Congratulations to AFCB, today you hit the 40 goal mark, conceded of course.

Can I reassure all you Cherries fans that the Premiership club just down the road will not be putting in any offers for any of your squad in Jan. I know that some of you think that Cook might be the target for some Premiership clubs, but as he is part of a "defence" that has leaked 40 goals that seems very unlikely to say the least.

Anyway, all the very best for 2014, I am sure AFCB will provide many opportunities for us Trolls to come on here.

Yes a good result against a side of Ipswich quality. Good to see us get back into it after falling behind. Well done to ED and JT and the players.

A very good performance, if only we could stick the ball in the net, I think we need to give ourselves more credit, we shouldn't be happy with a point from the game, we were by far the better side and absoloutly dominated every aspect of the game, six points off the play offs is brilliant, well done everyone today we really got behind the team, poor support from Ipswich I didn't hear them once

Well, we're very happy thank you...especially enjoyed the Everton win today. As we're of such little consequence to the mighty team down the road, I can't help but wonder why you don't have far loftier things to do with your time than come on here with your inane comments.

Oh, the relief of Brett's goal in the 74th. minute!! I guess that goes to prove that we no longer have to score first in order to not lose the game? It sounded a really good game against 1st class opposition, so well done to all the boys, both on pitch and off, and all the supporters too who created a great atmosphere, apparent even on the radio.
Hopefully this will give us a firm base from which to tackle the new year.
Happy and Prosperous New Year to the Cherries and all their supporters :-)

It says a lot for our much improved form that we come away from DC slightly disappointed with a draw against a decent Ipswich team today.
Hopefully we can use recent displays as a springboard for the 2nd half of the season, where a comfortable mid-table finish should be achievable. UTC

Same old, same old... Excellent game as usual, but can't take our chances. As you say SE, to come away disappointed (again I might add, because we've often not won, but been the better side), against a good Ipswich side, who are no mugs, is a credit to the team. UTCIAD

For those of you that could not be at the game can I say that it was a good game of football to watch and had we not missed couple of (what appeared to be) fairly easy chances we could have bagged the three instead of one point. However considering the opposition I would have taken the point right from the start.

Although I did not listen to the radio during the game I guess that Everton deserve our applause for winning against, the name of the other team escapes me at the moment but I am sure Miltonwhatshisname will put me right. I guess he has to take it out on someone so who better than the little club down the road,

the more I read his posts the more I begin to believe that he wishes he was an AFCB supporter. Can I say that you would be most welcome if your team is boring and not worthy of your support.

Happy New Year to one and all including all decent Saint and Pompey Supporters.

Extremely good game to watch today, before the game I would have been happy with the point but as the game progressed certainly after Ipswich scored I though maybe we deserved all three, dissappointed that the game was ruled out for a push,- pushing, barging , clinmbing shirt pulling was going on all match unpunished, so I feel a little robbed there, or did the ref have a bet on ?

Hopefully this will give us a firm base from which to tackle the new year.
Happy and Prosperous New Year to the Cherries and all their supporters :-)

Was it a foul on there keeper? bet the roof lifted of the stadium momentarily
I have to say that I saw nothing wrong with it and the ref had pointed to the centre circle I have no idea why he changed his mind! exactly the point I made yesterday but happy that we didn't lose.

Good performance with O Kane outstanding once again, thought Grabban looked a bit tired and may need a rest, although we are solid at the back and the five in midfield is working well we are desperate for a clinical finisher who would help us towards the play offs, have heard that Rantie is struggling mentally with his form and being away from his family but hopefully he can overcome this and start banging them in.

Another fantastic game where we dominated in every part of the pitch except the finishing. Listening to Eddie after the last few games this will be rectified in January then we will have a very strong championship side. I think rightly Eddie gave the promotion team until January to prove who can and who can't cope in this league and from what I have seen there is not to much to do to achieve what we set out to do this season i.e consolidate. A couple of quality player in the summer and im sure next season will shock quite few.
Also keep the football this exciting and Max might have to make the ground bigger or build a new one :)

An an administrative issue for the club To me that is the one and only thing left to do ,is negotiate the buy back of the ground from stractadean ,maxims standing with the fans would be catapulted even further if this was to happen ,

I heard someone say that he wanted to buy the whole of Kings Park ground and to built a new stadium where the Athletic Stadium is. I suppose the whole area is owned by the council and with the economy as it is who knows the council could well do with a penny or two to offset the cost of that wonderful Surf Reef!!!!

One never knows we only have to look at the Royals (looking for a buyer!) but if ever there was an opening for AFCB to progress on and off the pitch it must surely be now let us be positive and optimistic and enjoy things as hey unravel. UTCIAD

Surely it's not the right time to consider buying back the stadium. An outlay of £5m would only save £360k pa. Much better if there is £5m in Max's sack to put that towards purchasing players in the transfer window/covering existing wages so we fall within Financial Fair Play parmeters.

Oh dear miltonscummer, I hear Lalalalapoachedfromb
oscombe or whatever his name is, is actually fit and ready to be sold in a January transfer window for once.

We'll look forward to the 25%

Got enough points to stay up yet?

Another fantastic game where we dominated in every part of the pitch except the finishing. Listening to Eddie after the last few games this will be rectified in January then we will have a very strong championship side. I think rightly Eddie gave the promotion team until January to prove who can and who can't cope in this league and from what I have seen there is not to much to do to achieve what we set out to do this season i.e consolidate. A couple of quality player in the summer and im sure next season will shock quite few.
Also keep the football this exciting and Max might have to make the ground bigger or build a new one :)
An an administrative issue for the club To me that is the one and only thing left to do ,is negotiate the buy back of the ground from stractadean ,maxims standing with the fans would be catapulted even further if this was to happen ,
Surely it's not the right time to consider buying back the stadium. An outlay of £5m would only save £360k pa. Much better if there is £5m in Max's sack to put that towards purchasing players in the transfer window/covering existing wages so we fall within Financial Fair Play parmeters.
Good idea as non no states if MD plans are to build on site of athletic stadium build it pull out of dean court and leave stractdean with a white elephant for a while

Unless I am much mistaken it must have been the assistant who change the ref's decision because I am sure he pointed to the centre circle indicating a restart. If anyone saw it different I would like to know.

It did look like he pointed to the centre circle, but I assume he was indicating a free kick to Ipswich which would obviously look similar, either way I would like to know what the free kick was for, the keeper caught it and dropped it in the goal, am I right or did I miss something ?

Good to see AFCB getting some better results and playing attractively. I was not able to attend today's match and - living out of the area - cannot pick up the radio Solent commentary except via the Cherries Player. Not unusually (I regret to say) the Cherries Player allowed me only to listen to the Ipswich local radio commentary - and not the Solent one. But a good and balanced commentary it was.

Their overwhelming conclusion was that AFCB played well but should have been 2 or 3 goals up by half time - far too many chances having been wasted. So, once again the stats give us the greater ascendancy only for us to fall short at the final hurdle. The Ipswich commentary team also said that their team would have been well pleased with the draw. I'm wondering where I've heard that before!

So, with the January transfer window soon to open, I do hope that Eddie will bring in one (or more) players who will be able to take greater advantage of the excellent work that goes into the making of so many golden opportunities. But, overall, well done.

Very entertaining game today with Ipswich off to a flyer. Once we had found our feet we battered them but did not convert our chances. Having said that as with Birmingham their keeper was their man of the match. Why the 2nd goal was ruled out beggars belief. Like most posters on here i would of taken a point before kick off but on reflection feel robbed of all three. A massive well done to the management and team for a very positive festive period . Keep the Faith UTCIAD MOM Eunan O'Kane again.Absolutely brilliant.

Maybe the league show will shed some light on it, if they are sufficiently interested in it. I have to say that because of my creaky bones I don't wait up to watch it I normally see it on Iplayer and even then I only look at our game. My impression is that they don't normally give much air time to incidents of this nature in any case our club is far too far south to matter!!!!!

The only Bournemouth supporter in East London here.

After watching the QPR match I remember Eddie coming out claiming we played well, had a lot of shots of goal and possession. Whilst I agreed, we did play well. Typical occasion though we played a better team whom never left second gear. If we scored one goal they would score two.

After the match frankly I was convinced and commented that we needed 7 points from 9. 10 points from 15. It was clear after QPR and Derby this season we are not good enough to beat the top teams, but efficent at beating teams we need to beat.

Thrilled is a word I use often in 2013. And frankly watching Bournemouth this season is a pleasure. We are entertaining. We hold the ball, create chances, even if we lose to me it's money worth spending such is the entertainment I witness watching us.

December... what a month!!!!

I'm very excited that this team has the motivation to put some bad performances behind us in January. Lets prove a point to Huddersfield and Watford. Again it's another tough month, realistically we need a good 9 points from 12.

Because February I'm not optimistic!!!!

This draw and consistent performance has convinced me that Bournemouth can stay up.

Please note I do mean we only lose to the top teams. This does not include Reading... they are not a top team!!!! HAHAHAA

Overall a good performance today against a rather average ipswich side. o'kane and richie again our stand out performers, quite why surman was mom i dont know, still not convinced by him. at half way through our season i believe we have adapted well to championship life with only afew players struggling. In january we must clear out deadwood ( addison mcdermott tho-miss etc) and add a new striker. Only thing in first team i would change would be francis, hes too slow and cant cross to save his life, too many goals have been conceded beacause of him. Thought mcquoid was poor today, but maybe that a little harsh as hes been out injured? looking forward to brighton, lets make abit more noise than those ipswich fans made today , they were silent!

As a bmth supporter for nearly 50 years I have to say that I cannot remember a better team than this. I have seen the last 3 games. It was a dogged performance at Sheff Weds and even if the style wasn't good we ground out a win. We turned on the style against Yeovil and got a thoroughly deserved good win and only a good goalie and the ref prevented a win today. Considering Ipswich are now in top 6 and with a better run of the ball we would have beaten them convinces me that we can achieve a solid mid table in May which will be exactly what I was hoping for at the start of the season. The style of play is excellent to watch. I'm really pleased about the really good attendances. (Thanks EM for the Ted McD stand). Hopefully this will enthuse Max to give some cash to EH. Perhaps even a run in the FA Cup? I would give a break to some of the ever presents against Burton.

The tv footage showed there was little or no contact on the keeper until after he had palmed the ball into the goal due to his panic to reach it before Elphick.

Referees normally guess in this situations and side with the keeper.

I know just the man for you.......he is called Bendtner and he warms the bench for Arsenal. Make Arsene a decent offer...a goat, a sheep..whatever - and you can have him...........

Fact 1 Ipswich are a very average side and lucky
Fact 2 Bournemouth are a good side and had they taken their chances would have won this game comfortably.
Fact 3 Need to rest..... Ritchie/Fraser/O,kan
e for the cup game against Burton
Fact 4.Eddie has found a successful formula and this will bode well for the 2nd half of the season.
Fact 5 I have never felt more excited and enjoying every game WLD

Francis unable to cross for his life....You must be watching a different player as that is his best attribute !!!! As for Surman i thought he was outstanding today and gets better with each game.!!
For me Francis was our player of 2012/13. He continues to defend, overlap and cross well. bournered26, which Francis are you talking about? It's not Bmth's right back, that's for sure.
Try reading again i was saying that Francis is a good crosser of the ball and a good player. The quote was from someone who does not rate him as a player for some reason !!!
Sorry bournred26, it's ahtafcb I meant to criticise.

I don't think you're buying anyone in January, just selling a few of your assets.

What a great game today . Again we were fantastic . If Eddie gets a goal scorer in jan , we will definitely finish in the top half . We had so many chances today , we just need someone who can stick them away . Does anyone know why rantie wasn't even on the subs bench today , hopefully Eddie has realised his mistake in buying him ....
Unfortunately he's in Hospital, cant tell why, my wife would be in trouble.
Great game today, could so easily have won
You can't say why because Rantie is no where near a hospital unless it's a medical clearance to fly back to Africa for National Service.

I think it's official that Rantie has a stomach problem whereas the national service seems a bit odd,why would we pay 2.5 million for a striker knowing he will be away for six weeks during a key period?

As far as I'm aware, South Africa abolished National Service at the end of the Apartheid back in 1994 - so maybe all the people spreading this rumour would like to come up with another, maybe slightly more credible, one?
