THE first wheelchair rugby club in Dorset is £200 better off thanks to the Carbon Stoppers appeal.

The Dorset Destroyers are the latest club to receive a donation from the appeal, run by Yellow Buses and the Daily Echo.

The club was launched by Nick and Sue Coombs at the Poole Park Festival in August.

They have already raised more than £3,000 to pay for their first rugby chair thanks to donations and grants from the Steve Bernard Foundation and Poole council and are looking to fund a second chair.

Nick said: “It's an incredible sport but, amazingly, no clubs existed in Dorset, Wiltshire or Somerset.

“We've now launched taster sessions at The Junction Sports and Leisure Centre in Broadstone on Sunday 26 and November 9 from 1pm until 3pm.

“The sessions are open to potential players with a physical impairment aged 16 or over, beginners or pro-players, male or female.”

Carbon Stoppers was launched by Yellow Buses and the Daily Echo six years ago. Each week, Yellow Buses holds a Thank You Thursday when every trip taken contributes to a separately administered Community Chest.

The bus company has pledged a minimum donation of £50 per week to the Carbon Stoppers fund with Daily Echo readers invited to nominate worthy recipients.
