IT WAS a nice day for a white wedding in a Holdenhurst village on Saturday.

The village’s annual scarecrow festival took place on the village green with visitors flocking to the traditional fete-style event with stalls and games including skittles.

Organisers decided against a competition this year, instead pooling their resources to create the wedding scene, complete with vicar, photographer, guests and of course, bride and groom.

One villager went one step further and created a ‘jilted lover’ scarecrow outside their home, which appeared to be crying.

The scarecrows, which were made by residents, will remain on display for around a month.

Wendy Sharp, who is on the organising committee, said: “We have had a lovely day. The weather has held off and so far there has been a good crowd here.

“All the villagers have contributed and it’s a real community effort.

“This is our first scarecrow wedding. Normally we have a competition but this year we decided to make it a joint event.

“We have two scarecrow events every year now; one in the summer and one at Christmas when we do the scarecrow nativity.”

The event has been happening for around seven years now, thanks to the hard work of volunteers.

Wendy added: “We love it. It brings people into the village; the amount of people that stop and have a look. It’s a real talking point.

“It’s a great joy to see people enjoying it.”
