TRAFFIC calming measures are set to be installed around a Bournemouth primary school, in response to residents’ complaints about inconsiderate and dangerous parking.

People living in Malvern Road and the surrounding area have long complained that inconsiderate parents block their drives and put children at risk during drop-off and pick-up times Now, two years after they first asked their ward councillors to take action, a raft of safety measures are being proposed.

These include a 20mph speed limit zone around St Walburga’s School, waiting and loading restrictions during school drop-off and collection times and the installation of speed humps.

Moordown councillor Sue Anderson said: “I expect there will be one or two people who won’t like the speed cushions but it’s got to be done, Malvern Road really is a hotspot and we can’t afford to have people racing around the schools.

“We’re really pleased that it’s going ahead.”

Richard Pearson, traffic and road safety manager, said work was due to start in the summer, subject to the results of consultation.

“These plans are part of the council’s safer routes to school initiative.

“This aims to improve safety around schools and encourage children and parents to use more sustainable modes of transport when travelling to and from school, as well as helping to alleviate congestion, improve health and reduce environmental impact,” he said.

“We have listened to residents’ concerns about safety around the school and plan to address these with a number of traffic measures.

“Some of the work will include the widening of the pavement outside of the school where at peak times the area is very congested.

“The work will also include installing traffic calming features to support the reduction of the speed limit of 20mph, and putting in place parking restrictions near to the school.
