Man arrested after BMW lands on A31 following embankment crash

ONE man has been arrested on suspicion of driving offences after a BMW went over the side of the flyover at Ashley Heath and landed on the A31 below.

The car, which ended up on its side, may have been in collision with a white Mercedes Sprinter van moments earlier on the A338, said police.

Two male occupants of the green BMW 325i were taken to Poole Hospital with serious, but not life threatening, injuries. One has since been arrested and is helping officers with their inquiries.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident which happened at around 12.35am on Thursday morning.

The road was partially closed for several hours due to damage to a crash barrier but it has since been made safe by local authority workers and the road was fully open by 4.10am.

Anyone with information is asked to call PC1823 Stroud on 101.

So cars can crash through barriers and land on roads and people below. Perhaps Dorset road unsafe should think about that when they park up on the fleetsbrisge flyover

So, because it DOESN'T say something it makes it more likely?

Other things that weren't mentioned were that all occupants were eating pork pies. I imagine that they didn't mention that, because they obviously were?

What strange logic you have.

This story is wrong. The BMW failed to slow on the a338 for the roundabout and went over the barrier down onto the a31 hitting a water company van that was travelling on the a31. The BMW landed on its side with one occupant being thrown through the convertibles roof onto the carriage way. Whilst the BMW was on its side it was hit by a white sprinter witch briefly stopped then drove off whilst people who had stopped to help we're calling emg services and dealing with casualties. Both occupants of the BMW stank of booze. It's was truly amazing that no one was killed.

They don't say as it could be a factor in the BMW crashing.
The logic I have is that it don't state "the police were called"
So you conclude and read between the lines.
They were mini Melton Mowbray's.

It's not a "crash barrier" it's a SAFETY barrier. Still didn't work but it may have slowed them down a bit.

Sloppy and inaccurate reporting yet again by the Echo. There isn't a flyover at Ashley Heath, it is an underpass. There is a flyover at at Ringwood some 0.5 miles to the East.

Echo reporter.......the clue as to what a flyover does is in the name with the "over" bit being key. In a similar fashion with underpass - the key word is "under".

I'd be all for it if Dorset police could demonstrate that this is the best effort that can be made to reduce road casualties and that the finances are entirely open and transparent and that no one is acting more on their job security than public safety. Unfortunately everytging they do conflicts with all of these.

Is the safety camera really needed here, pretty much next to the police depot ? If cars are speeding there it may suggest the traffic police are not doing there job?

Exactly, it is designed to absorb some of the vehicle energy on impact but keep the occupants alive, which it did. A solid concrete wall would have prevented vehicle incursion onto the dual carriageway below, but would have killed the occupants instantly.
