Hammer-wielding armed robber jailed for 12 years

Armed robber David Hinde was jailed for 12 years

The scene of Hinde's first crime in Boscombe East

A DANGEROUS hammer-wielding robber who held up three bookmakers in three consecutive days was jailed for 12 years today.

David Hinde was told he presented “a substantial risk of serious harm to the public” by Judge John Harrow before he was led away from Bournemouth Crown Court, having admitted three counts of armed robbery and two of possessing a blade.

The crimes, in May this year, saw him extort nearly £1,500 from bookmakers in Bournemouth and Hampshire. In one incident he dressed in a suit and wielded a claw hammer. In two others he was armed with a knife.

“You had only been out of prison for about five months when you embarked upon this campaign of armed robberies,” said Judge Harrow.

“You terrified [the victims], it is clear they were severely traumatised and still are to the extent that they have not even been able to return to work.”

He said Hinde was “completely addled by drugs”, and he believed there was a risk of the 35-year-old “using that knife” were he to offend again.

Hinde, addicted to drugs since he began drinking and using cannabis at the age of 13, started his spree at Ladbrokes in Christchurch Road, Boscombe East, on May 7.

Prosecutor Sadie Rizzo said in each case he walked quickly to the counter and thrust a weapon at the cashier, demanding money.

The following afternoon he struck Coral in Castle Lane West, but police soon had his identity thanks to an appeal published in the Daily Echo, she said.

He was arrested near his home the following day after a third raid, in which he targeted Ladbrokes in Leith Avenue, Portchester, near Portsmouth.

Ms Rizzo said Hinde had been jailed for two “almost identical” crimes in 2011, and his prior record included robberies and wounding.

In mitigation, Brian Sharman said Hinde was a “Jekyll and Hyde” character who broke the law when he was abusing drugs, but said he was not “entirely bad”, noting his good behaviour in prison.

He said Hinde had been taken into care at age 14, had started using crack cocaine at 16 and heroin at 22.

Hinde, of Walpole Road, Boscombe, was jailed for four years on each count of armed robbery to run consecutively.

So a drunken/drugged driver kills someone and gets SIX+ years.
So a druggie robs a couple of betting shops of 1,500 gets TWELVE years.
Why IS 1,500pounds worth twice as much as a life???
Some good ol' British Justice?? and the rest of the world still looks at the British Justice system as being one of the best there is, WHY ??.

He has a point. Not much consistency is there. A banned, drunk driver who takes a life then just drives away gets half the sentence. Justice ? Don't think so.

The destruction I've seen bookies cause a claw hammer is very kind! Wit or half wit; at least I see the real world.

Ladbrokes and Coral probably bet each other who will get robbed most and how many families they can make homeless.

I know from your previous comments on here that you are not all there so I don't know why I'm bothering, but here goes. If this muppet had gone into a board meeting at a bookies with a hammer or gone up to the CEO and demanded money then you might have a semblance of a point. But no, he went and threatened shop staff earning barely above minimum wage to support their own families. I sympathise with people who get addicted to gambling and am no fan of betting shops myself, but if it's a choice between the welfare of the worker who is trying to make a living and the guy putting 100s in a roulette machine. I know who I'm most sympathetic to.

I worked in a bookies for several years and you are spot on. The ONLY thing they care about is profit, they couldn't care less about staff or customers. They claim that they don't have screens because it "effects customer service" (which anyone who has ever been to a bank or a bureau de change knows is rubbish). The real reason is that they have so many premises now that it would cost them a considerable amount of money to install screens in all shops, they would rather take the loss from the robberies than the expense from installing the screens. The effects on the staff in these robberies don't even register on the scale.

what a stupid comment.
if a man or women decides to gamble all their wages in a betting shop then that's that person fault no one makes anyone gamble money its down to the gambler. my ex husband was a gambler (hence why he's and EX) and he blamed everyone else for his addiction with gambling, but no one made him do it only himself, so no don't blame the shops for idiots who have a problem and for criminals who rob
