Police were alerted after staff at the centre discovered notes written by Mr Smith when they arrived for work on Monday morning.
The 58-year-old, who lived at Westwood Avenue, Ferndown, was last seen alive by colleagues at the centre on Sunday evening, deputy Dorset coroner Brendan Allen was told.
A post-mortem examination was carried out on Wednesday and Mr Smith’s cause of death remains unascertained, pending toxicology results.
The Bournemouth inquest was adjourned for further inquiries and will resume on Wednesday, September 10.
Tributes were paid to Mr Smith following his tragic death.
