LOCAL people are taking action to stamp out poverty with a special summit to be held in Poole.

Around 150 residents and people from groups across Bournemouth and Poole will attend the Local Poverty: Reality and Response event on Tuesday June 10, which is part of Bournemouth University’s Festival of Learning.

It will bring together people trying to prevent and reduce the harm of poverty locally and was initiated by Faith Links, an interfaith project.

Organisers are hoping it will be a red letter day in encouraging participants to bring about some real positive change.

Keynote speakers Tom Papworth, associate director of CentreForum, and Richard Bristow, chief executive of Poole Citizens Advice Bureau, will set the scene and there will be workshops covering budget management, energy costs, food poverty and homelessness.

“All parts of the faith community work closely with their local communities and see not only the everyday effects that living in poverty can have, but also that positive change is possible,” said Alistair Doxat-Purser from Faithworks Wessex.

“We’re delighted to have the support of so many people for our upcoming summit and would invite anyone with an interest to get involved in making a change.”

Borough of Poole council leader Cllr Elaine Atkinson said: “The perception of Poole is often that of a wealthy area, but the reality is that life is a struggle for some residents, despite many being in work.”

Cllr Jane Kelly, Bournemouth Borough Council cabinet member for partnerships and regeneration said: “I hope that through networking and sharing ideas we will develop new ways of tackling poverty and make a difference to those living on a limited income.”
