New Mayor of Christchurch praised for ‘grit and determination’

Bournemouth Echo: The new Mayor of Christchurch Cllr Denise Jones The new Mayor of Christchurch Cllr Denise Jones

THE new Mayor of Christchurch was praised for her ‘grit and determination’ at a special ceremony this week.

Cllr Denise Jones, who represents Grange ward, was named as Mayor of Christchurch at the annual council meeting held at Highcliffe Castle on Tuesday.

Proposer, fellow Grange ward councillor Paul Hilliard, said: “It is clear that her life and enjoyment are from helping people; in early life through her church and teaching and now through local government.

“Denise has recently fought bouts of cancer and continues a long battle with MS.

“She is a workaholic and rushes round to community meetings and committees.

“Denise treats being a councillor as an honour and a privilege and I hope people’s awareness of MS is increased by her example of mind over matter.”

Cllr Peter Hall, who seconded the motion, described Cllr Jones as a “fighter, who is the ideal person to head this council as First Citizen”.

He said she had achieved a great deal for her Grange ward residents and added: “She has the support of this council and the community.”

Cllr Jones said: “I must congratulate the retiring Mayor and Mayoress, John Lofts and Margaret Woolley, for the sterling work they have done in being such excellent ambassadors for our Borough during their Mayoral Year. They will be a very hard act to follow.

“However, we will endeavour to work for the benefit of everyone in our borough and to promote Christchurch whenever possible, to the best of our ability.”

Her charities for the coming year will be the Royal British Legion, Dorset Cancer Centre and the soon to open Somerford Arc. Cllr Denise Jones’ husband, Cllr David Jones, will be her consort.

Along with Hilliard is the most low profile ward councillor in living memory. You would have more chance of meeting Sheargar. Constituency surgeries are non existent, instead decisions are made after consultation with a tiny cabal of local activists. I can 't think of anyone less deserving of this position.

As someone who is non-political and showing no political colours, I feel the comments of Loyal2AFCB are similar to those words which prompted those famous words by Gordon Brown when he referred to a voter as a "Bigot" sir. Cllr. Mrs Jone,s I know from experience is a much loved much respected Councillor who has achieved much for Grange in her eight years as Councillor. She polled more than double the votes of the Labour candidate at the last election. I also know that her achievements have been appreciated by the majority of people around Grange. May I respectfully ask sir what contribution you have made to the local community? Or are you just a bigot who like to moan about everyone and everything without actually getting off your backside? I think the whole of Grange ward would be interested to know what value and improvement you have added to the area.

How right you are Muddyford Mick. I personally know the achievements of Councillor Jones, and I know the hard work she has put into her role as Councillor. I also feel that Loyal2AFCB is a bigot because he/she pontificates regularly to these pages yet he/she has never once, as far as I can remember, stated what their contribution to the area has been, except to moan and complain about everything people do.

If you feel so strongly that others are not doing the job, then next May you will have the golden opportunity to put your money where your mouth is by putting yourself forward for election as Councillor for Grange ward. It will give you an opportunity in your election address to tell the voters what you have achieved to date within the community.

Absolutely right. And she gets out and does the job despite having had multiple sclerosis for thirty or so years and operations for bouts of cancer in the last one. Sometimes she has to be in a wheelchair, but she prefers not to if she can. I remember the Pancake Races. Not on a good patch, but as the then Deputy Mayor she stood throughout the (quite lengthy) proceedings, gave an excellent speech (though she hadn't been warned) and started EVERY race. She looked exhausted by the end, but smiled throughout: she hates to let people down. I look forward to seeing you as a candidate next year, Loyal2AFCB, where you can tell us what you have done which is anything remotely approaching her achievements! And then the voting ... put yourself in the dock if you dare!

Loyal2AFCB, You don't seem to be very popular on this page my friend. One of the comments describes you as a bigot, and I think that comment was made for you. I have read your comments time and time again in this newspaper and you appear to be someone who shouts a lot, yet does nothing. Constantly complaining yet not prepared to do anything.

People commenting on your submission have suggested that instead of being a barrack room lawyer, you put your money where your mouth is and stand for councillor next May. I doubt you will though.
