UFO, lightning ball or Chinese Lantern? Mysterious light spotted over Poole on New Year's Eve

Bournemouth Echo: UFO, lightning ball or Chinese Lantern? Mysterious light spotted over Poole on New Year's Eve UFO, lightning ball or Chinese Lantern? Mysterious light spotted over Poole on New Year's Eve

THIS mysterious light was captured on CCTV at 11.10pm last night by a Daily Echo reader.

There was lightning on the horizon at the time, but the reader said he did not think it was a Chinese Lantern - it could have been a lightning ball.

What do you think?

Yes, could it possibly be that "move not too quickly and then speed up in gusts of wind, then change direction" type lightening that I've never heard of?

No way a lantern. Look at the way it lights up the gardens. Lanterns are not that powerful illumination.

not a chinese lantern, they are smaller. I remember about 5 years ago, I was driving back from Dorchester to Poole and I saw about 6 lights in the sky similar to that, they were much bigger and brighter than stars and weren't moving. I called it into the police the next day and quite rightly they probably assumed I was a nut job. I just drove home and ignored it, I wish I got out the car and watched what happened

Looks like a Chinese lantern, it blows onto a roof ,rolls up it and floats away , swinging as a lantern would. It looks bright because the camera is sensitive and oversaturated by the light of the flame. Water on the lens making it even bigger flare on the image. If it was a colour camera you would see the yellow /orange glow. An electrical discharge would dance all over the place, possibly even going into the wind, so sadly not St Elmo's fire/ball lightning.

Don't worry ASM, I saw those too heading Wareham way along the coastline.
. I thought they may have been a group of Military helicopters on exercise showing no lights but just a glowing hot exhaust manifold.
I then reverted to the lanterns conclusion as one started to drag behind.

You're right, it must have been aliens. This is the only logical explanation.
