Fight? Chuck in the towel, Cheryl

This article is brought to you by our exclusive subscriber partnership with our sister title USA Today, and has been written by our American colleagues. It does not necessarily reflect the view of The Herald.

HOW much evidence does Cheryl Cole need for her to see her old man as a selfish creep who would appear to worship his own wedding tackle?

How many front pages, snaps of saggy underpants, alleged sex texts, alleged affairs, and floozies on the make can Cheryl bear to hear about before she calls it a day?

What makes this latest episode even worse is that, in a fatal move, Cheryl told Hello! magazine – before the latest allegations that Ashley had texted lewd pictures of himself to a topless model – “If it’s worth fighting for, then fight. And in the case of me and my husband, it’s worth it,” she said.

If there’s truth in the allegations, it so is not.

If he’s guilty of what he’s accused of and he’s denied in a convoluted explanation, he would appear to have a serial contempt for her love, her reputation and her happiness. If he truly cared, would he keep finding himself in these compromising situations?

Cheryl talks about love; she sings about it.But what about being on the receiving end of it? Has Ashley ever bought her a cup of tea in bed, driven to buy her Lemsip when she’s got the flu and called her up for no reason at all, to tell her he’s proud of her?

A few months back it was claimed that “why Cheryl stays with Ashley” is one of the biggest conundrums in modern Britain and you do have to wonder what’s the future for her in this relationship.

She’s already hinted she’d like to have a baby. With Ashley Cole? He’ll be there for the conception...

Cheryl’s got money and fame up to her perfectly plucked eyebrows. She couldn’t be richer or more beautiful. She sings about fighting for love and yes, real love IS worth fighting for.

But what she’s got doesn’t look like love; it looks like someone who appears to treat her like dog poo.

If Cheryl doesn’t dump Ashley she needs her brains testing because the teary-eyed, loyal Geordie lass thing won’t wash for ever.

There are no kids, she’s financially independent and it’s not as if there aren’t plenty more fish in the sea. Around five million in her case.
