THE Samaritans in Weymouth have received a ‘noticeable increase’ in calls relating to financial problems.

The charity is urging people concerned with money pressures or their job security to contact them to discuss their fears.

Samaritans of Dorset director Sara said: “We have had a noticeable increase in calls at our Weymouth centre relating to the credit crisis.

“We are aware that in Dorset – as everywhere – many people have been finding it tougher on a day-to-day basis to make ends meet and the charity is aware that people are experiencing financial worries.

“It can be really important for people to talk to somebody about how they are feeling rather than keeping worries to themselves.

“Our volunteers are on hand night and day to offer confidential, non-judgmental support to anyone experiencing any kind of emotional stress – including stress caused by their financial situation.”

The Samaritans reported a 25 per cent increase in calls to its London helplines in August and September compared to the same period in 2007 and attributed the rise to stress caused by the credit crunch.

As part of a recruitment drive Samaritans of Dorset have doubled their volunteers from 35 to 70 in the last two years and 14 new members are about to begin training.

Spokesman John Grantham said he has undertaken hours of distributing leaflets to encourage volunteers.

He said: “We are massively increasing the number of volunteers on our phones.

“We are currently working on a marketing operation to help with this.”

Anyone who is interested in learning more about becoming a Samaritan can visit information sessions on November 3 and November 6. To find out the venue or for more information call John Grantham on 07990 583167.
