A HOTEL which features in Thomas Hardy's novel The Mayor of Casterbridge has been put up for sale with a £3 million price tag.

The Kings Arms Hotel in High East Street, Dorchester is mentioned by name in what is possibly the most famous of Hardy's novels.

Now hotelier Mark Bowley is offering the popular venue through agents Christie and Co of Winchester for offers in the region of £3 million.

The hotel on High East Street underwent a £1 million refurbishment in 2005 but was built in 1720 and still retains many of its original and classical Georgian features.

And not only is it famous for its appearance in Hardy's novel, during its lifetime it has played host to many famous guests including monarchs Queen Victoria and George VI.

The hotel is popular with both corporate and leisure guests, particularly during the main summer months as there are many local tourist attractions and facilities nearby encouraging visitors to the town all year round.

Ed Bellfield, from Christie and Co's Winchester Office, who is handling the sale, said: "The building has recently undergone extensive sympathetic refurbishments and now comprises two restaurants to accommodate a total of 132 covers, extensive conference facilities and a 60-cover bar, which is the focal point of the hotel and has a natural log fire at each end."

He said there were 37 en suite letting bedrooms, which included two four-poster suites with spa baths and a self-contained one-bedroom manager's flat.

"This Best Western hotel provides good quality three-star accommodation, including sumptuous restaurant and bar facilities, and offers a tasteful blend of contemporary style with traditional features.

"This perfect combination of the old-fashioned values and modern sophistication of style is carefully reflected in the quality of the hotel and its excellent reputation as a destination venue for both conference and leisure clients."

He said offers were invited for the freehold interest of the Kings Arms Hotel.
