THIS is the moment a driver on Portland narrowly avoided causing a three vehicle collision.

The footage was recorded by a Dorset Echo reader of a silver car overtaking them on New Road in the opposite lane.

On the approach to the roundabout outside The Heights Hotel, another car comes into view looking set for head-on collision with the silver car.

Realising their mistake, the overtaking driver moves back into the correct lane but almost fails to take into account the car behind them.

The silver car is seen dangerously moving between the two moving vehicles, causing the one previously heading towards it to come to an emergency stop.

The author of the footage wishes to remain known as Greg. Describing the car, he said: “It looks like a silver Ford Focus. Unfortunately, I can't make out the number plate. It looked like he was going to crash.

“I can't imagine how close it was for him taking both cars out.

“I've been overtaken going up on that road before. People do try and race up that bit of the hill. I'm not quite sure why.

“I was hanging back a little bit as he overtook.

“If he's driving like that it's only a matter of time before he's not so lucky.”

The incident was captured on a Transcend Drivepro 200, a dashboard camera Greg received as a present.

Greg said: “I thought it would be quite a cool little present.

“I do sometimes see ridiculous things. It would be quite a handy thing to have anyway just when other things happen.

“It's just a coincidence it has happened so soon after getting it.”

Greg has sent the footage to Dorset Police and is now cooperating with their investigation. A spokeswoman for Dorset Police confirmed: “The footage has been viewed and the driving is below the standard expected of a careful and competent driver.

“The matter is being investigated.”
