EVENTS for Weymouth Motocross got off to a flying start this afternoon with a series of displays and stunts.

The main racing isn't until tomorrow but crowds flocked to the Esplanade today to be entertained on the beach by Gorrillaman on his quad bike and the amazing Squibb Freestyle Stunt Display Team.

The Odyssey Majorettes kicked off the day's events at 2pm and children's rides and stalls lined the seafront all day.

Squibb Freestyle Stunt Display Team performed to gasps and applause from the crowd, performing awesome flips, turns and tandem bike jumps which left the audience wondering how they would make it to the other side of the stunt ramp.

Visitors also got a taste of the action for tomorrow with a motocross warm-up on the beach, and riders seemed to face stiff competition from Gorillaman and his quad bike.

Jennie Moors, 45, from Weymouth said: It’s great. It’s nice they made it two days instead of one. We came over at about lunchtime and saw the majorettes. We were also looking forward to the stunt bikes and they were really good. We’ll definitely come again.”

Claudette Bachrach, 21, from Yeovil, who was visiting Weymouth with her family, said: “We didn’t know about the event before but we think we might hang around for a little bit now. It’s quite a good event for the whole family, it brings everyone down to the beach.”

Tomorrow there will be four hours of racing on the beach, will will be officially started by Mayor Kate Wheller and Carnival Queen Emma Whitbread at 1pm.

Nearly 300 racers are expected to take part tomorrow.
