New buses with free wi-fi set for popular Weymouth route

Bournemouth Echo: NEW BUSES: Littlemoor estate NEW BUSES: Littlemoor estate

NEW buses with special features are set to operate on a popular route in Weymouth.

First Dorset says six vehicles with leather seats, free wi-fi and CCTV are to operate on the service 2 Littlemoor route.

It is part of a £8.5m investment by First across the region.

The six buses, all Wright Streetlite vehicles, are fitted with special features to make customers’ journeys more pleasant and comfortable. These include leather seats, free wi-fi, audio-visual next stop announcements, real-time information and CCTV.

Each vehicle can hold 37 seated and 33 standing passengers, and have ample space for both child buggies and wheelchairs.

General Manager for First Dorset Dervla McKay said: “We are currently investing in new vehicles across the Hampshire & Dorset region which all come equipped with these new, updated features as standard.

“The wi-fi in particular is the legacy of the Olympics and the sailing events which took place off the Weymouth and Portland coast. A significant area was upgraded to ensure exemplary wi-fi coverage throughout and we are thrilled to be able to reap the benefits of this for our new fleet of vehicles.”

She added: “Service 2 was chosen for the new buses because we recognise that this is a popular route for many of our customers, so wanted to enhance their experience of travelling with First Dorset. We hope they like their new vehicles and we look forward to hearing their comments in due course.”

The vehicles will be unveiled next Tuesday.

I'm pleased about the new buses even though they don't operate on a route I'd use, and amazed at the wifi connections. Bus passengers in Weymouth will have better and faster internet access than I have in my home office, in fact faster than this whole region of Dorset.
Is there any change I can install a desk on the bus and work from there instead? I won't need to bring my chair as the bus already has leather seats :-)

You can't be serious, your putting these buses onto the Littlemoor route?????
why don't you just send them straight over to Bosnia, Afghanistan, or the West Bank, least there they would be safer there.

I suspect the bandwidth will too limited for that!

Correct me if I'm wrong -it's been known- but don't 3G or 4G mobile devices connect to the web anyway?
If so, who will make use of this wifi facility? I can't recall seeing many ipad or laptop users waiting for the No.2 bus at the statue.

Crimbo, if you only need intermittent net access, you could base yourself in the nearby cafe and logon when the buses arrive - you should be within range |-)

EXCUSE ME...... not all Littlemoor residents are so called Littlemorons. Yes there are undesirables out here but dont tar us all with the same brush. It wouldnt be any different than putting the new buses on the no 10, 1 or 8 route. Most buses are marred with litter, graffiti and the undesirable element., who dont appreciate a decent bus unfortunately.

I personally think it is a waste of money altogether. Leather seats? Wifi? and lets not forget that annoying voice notification every two minutes. There are much better things that money could be spent on.

On a completely different tack: if it is illegal to travel in a car unless wearing a seatbelt how can it be safe for 33 people to be standing on a bus without any form of protection/restraint

Why is all this money being spent when the so called 'service 'provided to the majority of W&P is so appalling? I waited for half an hour for a 1 at Fords Corner on more than one occasion for a service that is supposedly every 8 to 10 minutes! First.... Get your priorities right and serve ALL the people and not just some!

The number 1 buses get stuck on the beach road that's why. It is nothing to do with how many there are.
