CHERRIES rounded off their pre-season campaign with a comfortable 2-0 victory over French side FC Lorient at Vitality Stadium.

Goals from David Brooks and Kieffer Moore secured victory, with neither Neto nor substitute goalkeeper Andrei Radu seriously worked throughout the contest.

There is now less than a week to go until the Premier League returns, Cherries hosting West Ham United on Saturday.

Here are a few of the topics which arose from the win over Lorient.

Bournemouth Echo:

Issues at right-back

Andoni Iraola has a big conundrum to solve in the next week.

Full-back had already been a priority position in the transfer market for Cherries in this window, but that has now been exaggerated following an injury to Adam Smith.

The 32-year-old missed Saturday’s win over Lorient, Iraola revealing to the Echo after the contest he was also likely to miss the upcoming game against West Ham.

The only other recognised right-back in the squad, Ryan Fredericks, is also not fit to feature as he continues to recover from a calf issue suffered towards the end of last season. He has not played since March.

Following Jack Stacey’s departure this summer, it leaves a gaping hole in the right-hand side of the defence.

Cherries do have a few potential options.

Jaidon Anthony filled in in that role against Lorient. He continued to look dangerous going forwards, as he has throughout pre-season, but had a few shaky moments defensively. There were also a few occasions, particularly in the first half, where Anthony and teammates Chris Mepham and Joe Rothwell looked unsure who was meant to be covering which space on the right.

Mepham himself has been utilised at right-back for Cherries in the past and given West Ham’s threat in the air and from set-pieces, could be a more viable option there for the opening day of the campaign.

The third clear option is James Hill. Yet to make his Premier League debut, the 21-year-old featured in Cherries’ last four friendlies, following his return from a loan spell at Hearts.

Primarily a centre-back, Hill has been used on the right by Iraola this summer, a position he also played in during his time north of the border.

Quizzed on the right-back issue, Iraola told the Daily Echo: “We have to put some player in that position. We don’t have right now, because Adam is out with an injury, one specific right-back to play there.

“I think there are two or three options, even without being right-backs, could help us if it is necessary there.”

Discussing Anthony’s performance in that position against Lorient, Iraola added: “Obviously it is not easy to adapt. Jaidon has done it in some minutes during past seasons, but in games where the team was losing and had to risk.

“It’s not the same to start as a right-back. But overall I think it was a good performance.”

Bournemouth Echo: Romain Faivre featured against his parent club

Romain Faivre impresses

Cherries fans got their first look at their new signing Romain Faivre on Saturday, albeit he was lining up against them.

Faivre joined Cherries for £12.8million from Lyon this summer, but was instantly loaned out to Lorient, a club he spent time at last season.

And the 25-year-old impressed on his first outing at Vitality Stadium.

Playing fairly centrally, Faivre played in an advanced midfield role, behind tricky striker Bamba Dieng.

Faivre caught the eye on eight minutes, drifting across to the left-hand side and helping drive his team up the pitch.

He won the ball himself, before using his cultured left foot to good effect with a string of pass-and-moves. Faivre then breezed past Anthony before eventually teeing up captain Laurent Abergel, who fired over the bar.

Faivre also had a penalty shout waved away after going over following contact from Illia Zabarnyi.

The midfielder’s impact dwindled in the second half, eventually replaced by Julien Ponceau, shortly before Moore’s goal.

Cherries’ board and fans will be keeping a close eye on Faivre’s progress in Ligue 1 this term.

Bournemouth Echo:

Hamed Traore makes an impact

Hamed Traore has gone somewhat under the radar after a stuttering start to his Cherries career.

Just days after arriving from Sassuolo, in a deal eventually costing the club £21million, Traore was thrown straight into the side away at Brighton & Hove Albion. Despite a 1-0 defeat, the Ivorian immediately caught the eye with his performance.

By the end of the campaign, he would only have seven appearances to his name due to two separate foot injuries.

The 23-year-old’s minutes have again been limited throughout pre-season. His 45 minutes against Lorient is the most he has managed in a fixture under Iraola, along with the same game-time in defeat to Maccabi Tel Aviv. The attacking midfielder came off the bench during the second half of games against Southampton and Atalanta, suggesting he may not yet be fully up to speed.

When he is fully fit, Traore could be an interesting option for Cherries, especially in new boss Iraola’s system, as the chief support to a main striker.

Traore certainly showed he was not afraid to shoot in the win over Lorient, looking desperate to find the net having been introduced at half-time.

He was first denied by a low stop from in-form goalkeeper Yvon Mvogo, having scrapped to help win the ball high up the pitch.

A defender then got in the way of a Traore effort, after he exchanged passes with Dango Ouattara.

And Traore must have known it wasn’t to be his afternoon when Mvogo produced a spectacular diving stop to tip a long-range strike away from the top corner.

He would have another go before the game was done, flashing a free-kick into the side netting.
