A PROJECT aimed at making cinema trips easier for people with autism has celebrated its first anniversary.

Social care provider Dimensions set up Autism Friendly Film Screenings in Bournemouth, in conjunction with the Odeon cinema group.

Since then there have been a total of 172 visits to special screenings in the town, held once a month at the Odeon.

An Autism Friendly Film Screening of Dr Seuss: The Lorax, will be shown at 11.30am on Sunday to mark the first year of the project.

Director of practice development at Dimensions, Lisa Hopkins, said: “The autism community have really embraced our project.

“This partnership has enabled so many people who experience autism to feel more involved in their community.”

The screenings are mainstream films shown in a sensory friendly environment, with lights on low, sound turned down and trailers omitted. Visitors are allowed to take their own food and make noise.

Tickets for this Sunday’s screening are now available from the Odeon accessibility helpline number 0800 138 3315.
