Two crashes in icy conditions led to the Avon Causeway near Christchurch being closed this morning.

The road, which has been closed for most of the week due to flooding and ice, was shut by police on Saturday morning over fears it was too dangerous.

Officers were called to the Avon Causeway at 8.50am on Saturday, following a report of a vehicle blocking the road.

A spokesperson for Dorset Police said the vehicle was half in a ditch and half on the road.

No-one was injured and the vehicle was recovered by a passing recovery vehicle.

The road was described as "incredibly icy", the force spokesperson confirmed.

A second collision involving two vehicles was then reported to police. No one was injured.

"We then decided the road was too dangerous and the local authority was called and road was closed and remains closed until it has been gritted and made safe."

The closure has been passed into the hands of the council who will treat it and reopen when safe.

Bournemouth Police posted on their Facebook page on Saturday morning and said: "Due to road traffic collisions in quick succession as a result of the ice, the Avon Causeway is closed both ways.

"This is to allow emergency services to deal with the incident. Please seek alternative routes."

Stony Lane in Burton remains closed under the railway bridge due to flooding.

There are also four miles of queues on the A31 near Ringwood.

A lane is closed due to drainage issues on the road.
