THE owner of a Dorset pub has spoken on the importance of community support amid “challenging” times.

James Mills, the new owner of The Riverside at The Coventry Arms, has joined the hospitality industry at a time of soaring utility costs.

In recent months, the businessman has rebranded and refurbished the well-known Corfe Mullen pub, before re-opening its doors on Friday, October 7.

But what helped The Riverside settle back into the community, was the “tremendous local support” it received.

James said: “It’s been incredible.

“It’s been received really well. The locals have been back in, those who have been here previously for many, many years.

“But it has been challenging- it’s not the best time to be opening a pub. Really, we should’ve been opening in the summer, but we couldn’t.”

Holly Emptage, who designed the interior for The Riverside, added: “We’ve had incredible local support. Everybody on Facebook has got behind us.

“We’ve probably been busier than a lot of pubs because of the support we have from people.

“I think they’re shocked to see someone has actually done something with it.”

But despite a difficult winter expected for the hospitality industry, the team at The Riverside are staying positive, and are looking forward to next year’s plans.

With the refurbishment came a huge outdoor area, stretching down to the River Stour, and featuring a smart bar and kitchen area.

James revealed his plans to create a ‘fine dining by the water’ experience, with limited tables by the river, and diners served by personal waiters.

The premises has also gained an island on the river, which James hopes will become home to weddings, festivals, and other events.
