A MAN has been jailed for several months after being convicted of an assault, failing to surrender to custody and multiple thefts from shops.

Daniel Ashley Westwood was sentenced at Poole Magistrates’ Court on Monday, April 4, for a series of criminal offences.

Westwood, 26, pleaded not guilty to assaulting a woman by beating her at an address in Blandford Forum on November 25, 2020.

The offence was proved in his absence at a court hearing on February 28.

When he was in the dock on April 4, Westwood pleaded guilty to failing to surrender to custody at Weymouth Magistrates’ Court on April 1, having been bailed on March 2.

He also admitted six counts of theft relating to a shoplifting at Asda in Culliford Crescent, Poole, on December 30, 2021, and five incidents at Co-op in Sandbanks Road, Poole, between January 22 and February 2.

These crimes involved him stealing either alcohol or packs of fresh steak.

Magistrates’ sentenced Westwood, whose address was given as Leigh Road, Wimborne, to a total of 19 weeks’ imprisonment.

He was ordered to pay £100 compensation to the victim of the assault, £76 compensation to Asda and £212.49 compensation to Co-op Stores.

The bench imposed a restraining order preventing the defendant from contacting the assault victim. The order lasts until April 3 next year.
