Speedway: Newman moving on after Buccs blow

BUCCANEERS reject Kyle Newman arrived back in Britain and promptly reiterated he has no intention of holding a grudge against Bournemouth bosses Garry May and Neil Vatcher.

The fast-maturing 18-year-old has just returned to his Poole home following an eight-week stint in Australia.

And he refreshingly said May and Vatcher were only doing their jobs when they decided to snap up Daniel Halsey instead of him for 2010.

Newman played a pivotal part in Buccaneers’ charge to a National League and cup double last season.

So his unexpected departure shocked many of the Wimborne Road faithful.

But Newman, walking again after breaking his thigh in six places in a horror track spill in October, is determined to let bygones be bygones.

The teenager said: “I was gutted to be dropped by the Buccs.

“It’s my hometown club, but at the end of the day speedway is our profession, you can’t let these things get to you.

“I was over it almost straight away after it happened (in early December). You have to move on and if you don’t, you don’t move forward. I’m not going to have grudges. I’ll go and see the Buccs and watch them ride because I’m still mates with them.

“I will not fall out with Garry and Neil. They have a job to do and I have a job to do for Newport.”

Hornets snapped up Newman within days of the youngster being informed by Buccaneers that his services were no longer required.

Newman said: “My aim now is to be back on a bike and racing at the start of the season.

“I’m going to Poole Hospital for an X-ray and check-up on Monday. That’s D-Day and we’ll take everything from there.

“My progress will be dependent on how the muscle builds up in my leg, but I’m confident I’ll be back for tapes-up.

“Hopefully the doctor will say everything is fine with my thigh, then I’ll be booking into physio pretty much as often as I can.

“I’ll be in the gym from here to the start of the season every day with Brendan Johnson who has just come back from Aussie as well.

“It’s looking quite positive for the new campaign.”

Discussing his non-riding trip to Aussie, Newman added: “At the very start I thought to myself ‘I can’t get on a bike’ and that was the end of it. But once I started walking and moving on fitness wise, I thought ‘the bike looks good to ride and I’ll hop on and practice’.

“I’m glad I forced myself not to because if anything had happened I definitely would not have been fit to start the season, and maybe not even ride during the whole campaign.

“Now it’s given me a greater opportunity to be fit and Marcus Williams has already offered me a place to race down under again next winter, so that’s the plan, get more experience there then.”
