Confident Jalal backs Cherries' quality

BULLISH Shwan Jalal ended his two-month wait for a Dean Court clean sheet and then warned Cherries' rivals: We can beat anybody in League Two.

Cherries again failed to produce their best form on home soil as they were held to a goalless draw by Cheltenham Town yesterday.

In a tight game of few chances, Brett Pitman twice came close as the hosts dominated the latter stages, but Cherries were unable to secure a third consecutive victory.

Despite his team failing to hit the heights of the away performances which yielded excellent wins at Crewe and Rotherham, Jalal remained optimistic.

Reflecting on the goalless draw, he said: “The second half was pretty much all us attacking, but fair play to Cheltenham. We were in that position last season when we played away from home.

“They stuck to their job and got away with a point, but we’re also a point closer to where we want to be.

“Cheltenham stuck to their job, but not every team that comes down here is going to stick to their job and we’re going to get opportunities. We’ve just got to keep grinding away and, whether it’s a bit of luck or a bit of magic from one of our players, we’ll get the positive result.”

With Cherries preparing to take on Notts County in a key home clash on Tuesday, the influential goalkeeper is upbeat about his side’s prospects against one of the division’s other major promotion contenders.

He said: “We know that on our day, we can beat anybody in this league. I think we’ve got nothing to fear.

“We’ve just got to go out on Tuesday and play the way we know we can – the way we played against Crewe and Rotherham.

“If we play like that, I don’t think we should fear anybody.”

Although Cherries did not get the desired result against Cheltenham, Jalal played his part by ending a six-match wait for a clean sheet, with the shut-out his first at Dean Court since the victory over Shrewsbury on December 5.

He added: “The games we lost were a small blip. But we went to Crewe, who have got three great strikers, and we contained them. We went to Rotherham and that was only their second defeat at home this season, so that speaks volumes for how we are playing.

“We went through a blip but it is good that the past three games we are unbeaten and we kept a clean sheet yesterday, so I think everybody is taking the positives out of that.

“I had one save to make and it made it even better that the striker (Justin Richards) is one of my best friends.

“Unfortunately we didn’t get the goal at the other end, but we tested the keeper and he stuck to his job as well. We’ve got to take the positives out of the game and look to Notts County.”

I think we can beat anyone in thus league too, even with the thread bare squad we have. So what is going wrong at home; tactics, team spirit, confidence, poor relations between players and supporters? I can't work it out, but if our home record was better we'd be above the dale and promotion would be in our hands!

Goal scoring has always been a problem just look at our goal difference +4. Maybe its time to give Brett a rest and give Jeff Golding a start he looks to try and move into scoring positions well had a couple of good half chances for the short time he was on. Also he would bring some speed and hight up front because without Fletch we win nothing in the air. Maybe if Brett didn't think he had a automatic start he would fight for his place like he used to have too.

We just struggle to break down teams at home. If I were an away team manager I would get men behind the ball, frustrate the home fans and team, then playing on counter attack down the wings. Think we will prefer to play Notts County next week as they will be more adventurous.

yes you say you can beat anyone, but some of your teamates play as if they do not really believe this, after 2 fine away wins a draw was not unexpected, but your home form has to improve not only to keep the team at the top but to convince the floating support you are worth turning out to watch, you have the ability to beat Notts County if you are fired up from the start and get them on the back foot, but if you sit back and let them take the initiave then you will always chase the game and probably lose, you have nothing to fear but yourselves, so please lads lets go at them and have a go

We haven't played well at home since we lost Molesley and Igoe's first injury - the fact is without them we don't have anyone to hold the ball and create opportunities, so when we attack we leave gaps. Away we are a counter attacking team, which is why we are better away, when teams attack us. There were a lot of tired legs out there yesterday as the heavy grounds, the plethora of games and the smallness of the Squad took it's toll. With so many games this month I rather fear that we will slip out of contention.

Errr I dont think so..replace a striker with almost twenty goals with a striker who cannot score or jump to head the ball?

I'm fed up with AFC players being interviewed in the Echo saying things like "We can beat anyone in this League" when they quite blatantly can't!
Forget the rhetoric Shwan ok.
I said the same to Fletch the other week too.
The players need to stop bigging themselves up and do their talking on the pitch!
When you've beaten Notts County 4-0, THEN you can say how good you are!

I agree Hughes should not be allowed to play, he is nothing short of athug. As for our team saying we can beat anybody in league 2, yes I am sure we can with a fully fit squad and that we are not at the moment. Aby sign of Coops yet? On another note, does anyne know how the poor man who collapsed in the car park yesterday is? Surely someone must know. Did not look good apparently.

Only one thing to say to Shwan:- ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS.
Agree with a lot of the other posts, team members have said how good they are and the next match they are defeated.
One of the problems with Cheltenham was that their goalkeeper was almost as good as ours and did make some spectacular saves.
I don't want to see the team come out as losers on Tuesday but on present home form, a win would be something we can only dream about.
Dream on!!!

we will see if he scores on tues against notts or just walks around with his hands on his hips blaming everyone else hes scored 3 in open play the last 10 games hollands and feeny has 2 each both not strikers and only a 50% success rate at penalty's. Don't get me wrong hes scored some great goals this year but has also played every game for 90 mins. Just sometimes a change does the team good and keeps the opponents guessing

We show support by turning up and chanting for 90 minutes, the point of this topic is that some players are not dong it at home!! Read the thread through, loyal supporters rightfully trying to find answers for our bad home form!

The sad news is that the gentleman who was poorly in the car park died. He had his grandson with him who was very distressed. He was a very good friend of 'John Piper'. His name was Bob Keniston. Can we all see if there could be a minutes silence on Tuesday night for this long supporting AFCB fan. He was a faithful season ticket holder. R I P Bob, our thoughts are with your family.

Can't quite understand why all the negativity? 7 pts out of 9 , I would have taken that at the start of last week. I'm 38 years old, a supporter since 5. This is afcb - don't expect too much. This time last year I was praying we'd just be a football league club this season. The boys have been magnificent considering everything that's gone on. Tuesday is such an important game. We need to create an atmosphere that'll act as a 12th man. I'm looking forward to it. Oh and to all those negative people out there, things could be worse. You could have been a family member or close friend of the poor guy who died on sat. I hope the boys get promoted for him!

We will win on Tue but only if we press them from the start. Clownty are slow starters so we need a good first half performance and preferably 2-0 by half time. I gaurantee that Clownty will not get back into it

lets face it,the best thing for afcb and the supporters would be for us not to get promotion this year.Lets just get all our players fit,get the embargo semi lifted and get a few debts paid off. This would give a true picture of what afcb can do in league two, probably champions.

I dont think so, I'd say promotion would bring more money to the club, and we should be on league 1 to be fair!

I think some people are drunk before sending posts on here. SWANAGE FAN.... drop the hitman?? are you watching the same game as everybody else? With a squad that cant be changed or freshened up then we should be lucky that we are covered in the positions we are. To be competing the way we are is a success and the players should be given a lot of credit. SUPER MAC FORD, well said, people forget of the situation were in, fans should appreciate that Brett pitman has scored a lot of goals without having to many chances. He should have scored sat and that is the first real sitter he has missed this season. Keep the faith boys, with the hitman up front, and fletch still fit, the play offs wont be a problem, shame the fact 1500 fans went missing, i bet they will be there tues for a 'big game' or for a another big occasion. at least the people on here are behind the team no matter what and will be in the crowd whatever the situation. Up the cherries
