Lee ready to activate further year on Cherries contract

VETERAN Lee Bradbury is determined to continue his distinguished career for as long as possible after earning an extended Dean Court stay.

The Cherries star triggered a clause in his contract – sealing the chance of a further year in Dorset – by making his 30th appearance of the campaign at Crewe last week.

And the former Manchester City player, 34, revealed that thoughts of retirement had not entered his head as he continued to focus on helping Cherries gain promotion to League One.

Asked whether the prospect of hanging up his boots had crossed his mind, Bradbury told the Echo: “No, not at all.

“I haven’t thought about retiring and I still feel fine. I feel that I am still giving to the team and adding towards what we’ve got.

“Up until the day when I feel I am letting the side down, I might think about it then, but I feel fine, part of the team and I am enjoying it every day.

“I just want to play as long as I can. I will be here next year now because I have just triggered a new contract.

“That is good for me and I am going to be involved next season. It is good I have got that and that will take me to the age of 36 nearly.

“At the moment, we have just got to concentrate on the job at hand and that is being at the right end of the table come May 8, hopefully in the top three.”

Bradbury, who has commanded career transfer fees of almost £5million, does not need to look far for inspiration, with Cherries legend Steve Fletcher going strong at 37.

“He’s 37 and you take your hat off to anyone who can play to that age,” said Bradbury.

“He’s done well and, in the past couple of games, he’s been a real handful for teams and has given us something to play off.”

Isle of Wight-born Bradbury is likely to take his place in the starting line-up when Cherries host Cheltenham Town this afternoon (3pm) on the back of two excellent victories.

He added: “Crewe is a hard place to go and Rotherham is even harder, so we were more than happy with six points and it has given us something to build on in the next couple of games.”

Signed by Kevin Bond from Southend in August 2007 and converted to play at right-back, Bradbury has scored 11 goals in more than 100 Cherries appearances.

Bradders you wont be able to retire until the FL allow us to replace you so at this rate you should still be playing at 50

Perhaps the FL should award us 17 points for managing to field a Team despite their best efforts to stop us lol

It must be nice to know, in this economic climate, that you've gauranteed yourself another years work by just doing your job and there is nothing the manager can do about it... I bet its not a small wage either.. If this clause keeps kicking in where will end ? When he is 37 ..dear oh dear...

remember the skeletons from Jason and the Argonauts. Experienced but easily defeated.

Put some money in board and get some respect rather than cynicism and dislike.

This is an excellent chance to get up but it seems down to the "insert word"

I have to say I am very disappointed in Lee Bradbury, not just for his poor performance today and terrible passing, but for his unprofessional reaction to paying supporters today. Yes he was getting some stick for every pass being a hit and hope, and always giving the ball away but he has to accept that for the money we pay to watch professional footballers we expect better. After the ironic cheer when he passed to a fellow team mate, this resulted in Lee turning to the main stand and angrily saying f%^& off with a offensive hand gesture! Now when there are kids watching this role model and god knows how many paying supporters, I think on Monday he needs a stiff talking to control himself, as did Wazza at Aldershot. I think Lee should be ashamed of himself for that reaction and remember that it's those people who pay his wages and they have a right to vent some frustration.

On another subject why oh why is it so so difficult to purchase tickets via telephone? The excuse this week was short staffed! The excuse a couple of weeks ago was the snow! If they want the numbers they need to be able pick up the phone and take peoples money!

i agree with you his distribution is poor and giving the ball away cheaply puts the team under pressure, but you must remember that he isnt a right back and wouldnt be in the team if eddie howe had a better alternative, hurry back coops.

Grayafcb - I really do appreciated our limited or no options thanks to the FL but come on I can play and have seen much better passing on Kings Park in the Sunday league! Lee is a professional being played to play the game, the supporters really can expect much better. Keeper or striker, passing is not difficult! Perhaps the clash of kits made him miss how own players? My point was mainly Lee's disgusting reaction to his paying customers. All the best

caught out of position time and time again, poor distribution, beaten on pace everytime. shocking performance

it must be worth mitchell putting 500k in just so we can get a decent right back as teams know he is the weakness at the back.
