WE certainly know to throw a party.

Even the most diehard republican would surely have to admit that the events of the past four days have raised the spirits of a nation in the doldrums. For a short time at least, there’s been no talk of the Leveson inquiry or the crisis in the eurozone.

No mention of double dip recession or splits in the coalition government.

Most people have pressed the pause button, put all those problems on hold and enjoyed the celebrations.

From the weekend river pageant to Monday night’s spectacular concert, the flypast yesterday and the hundreds of thousands who packed the Mall, it has been one heck of an occasion.

The Monarchy is the one institution that has the capacity unite the nation and make us feel good about ourselves. If anyone believes we would be better off without it, the events of the Diamond Jubilee provides overwhelming evidence that they’re simply wrong.
