POLICE were yesterday investigating a number of reported sightings of

murderer Steven Peters who escaped from his prison escort in Edinburgh

on Monday. He went on the run while on a compassionate visit to see his

mother. Several calls have come from the public reporting that Peters,

who was serving a sentence at Dumfries young offenders' institution, had

been spotted within the city and as far out as Rosewell in Midlothian.

Police say that Peters, 19, may present a danger to the public and

should not be approached. He was sentenced at the High Court in

Edinburgh in May 1991 to be detained without limit of time for murder

and assault to injury.
