Old joke bombs in ancient town

JEREMY Clarkson and his pals on Top Gear make a habit of winding people up – it’s what they do. And generally speaking it makes for some amusing television, apparently.

However, sometimes the joke isn’t widely appreciated, hence the leader of Christchurch Council raising the matter of the latest edition of the programme at a meeting on Tuesday.

The town is regularly on the receiving end of comments about its age profile, something the good burghers are a bit sensitive about.

Cllr Ray Nottage complained that the town was portrayed as some sort of extension to an old people’s home.

His idea of inviting the Top Gear mob back to spend a bit of time sampling the delights of the ancient borough is a good one. They’d have plenty to appreciate, not least in the People’s Republic of Highcliffe, often referred to as God’s Waiting Room.

In the meantime, any publicity is good publicity.
