Priory priest on move

Reverend Canon Hugh Williams of the Priory Church, Christchurch, is returning to where his ministry began in central London, to become Preacher of the Charterhouse, a historic school as well as taking the role of deputy master.

The reverend arrived at the Priory in 1993. He said: “I’ll miss Christchurch and its people. It’s been a marvellous place to live in and for my family to grow up.

“But it’s difficult too because although people are supportive, they have also been upset.”

Mr Williams leaves on April 26.

I am so sorry Father Hugh is leaving
us. He brought me back to the Church, he christened my daughter and my grandaughter, and he married my daughter and her husband (though not necessarily in that order!!!!!).

Father Hugh's wish to move on must be respected, and I wish him 'God Speed' on his future journey in life. May the Holy Spirit be with him. I hope the powers that be appoint a vicar even half as good as he is.

Thank you, Father.

Move to London he must be mad - God help him!

I trust he is taking the stone effigy of himself with him?

Despite having no faith, the various family services or memorials I have attended at the Priory have always been enjoyable, partly because it is such a beautiful building but mostly because of Hugh Edwards, a wonderful man, full of humanity and charm and a wicked sense of humour.
I’ll miss seeing your cheery face around town Hugh.
May your God be with you at Charterhouse. (which surely is in Sussex???)
