DARING youngsters on bikes, skates, scooters and skateboards flew through the air performing a range of impressive stunts in Christchurch.
More than 30 youngsters – some possibly future Olympic hopefuls – took part in the Skatejam event at Arena Skatepark at Two Riversmeet Leisure Centre yesterday afternoon.
There was stiff competition on show as all were competing for the glory of being the best among their age group and friends.
The event, which attracted lots of spectators cheering from the sidelines, was organised by Christchurch Borough Council play rangers.
Sonia Mendonca, one of the rangers, said: “It’s been brilliant.
“All the youngsters have had a great time.
“There’s been a real mix of people here and it’s all gone well. Plus the sunshine came out, which was a bonus.”
Children from the age of eight to 20 showed off their skills, completing fearless stunts and tricks off the different ramps and throughout the afternoon.
Johnny Cutts aged 20, from Burton said: “The park is something we really take pride in.
“The older guys will help to teach the younger ones and it’s just a lot of fun.
“I remember when I was younger and a lot of the skateboarders used to teach me. Now it’s the other way round and it’s really good to watch another generation of people coming in.
“The park is very popular with the locals and we helped to get involved with the design.
“Other parks are a little less set-up for people like us but it was brilliant we got to be involved.”
There was also slacklining available for youngsters to try, which involves balancing on one inch nylon webbing tensioned between two anchor points.
The Mayor of Christchurch, Cllr Peter Hall also paid a visit to the park in the afternoon.
