A GRANDAD had his leg and ankle broken when two youths knocked him off his moped and then jumped on his head.
Army veteran Sammy Coups, 68, was riding home when he swerved to avoid two lads, but was knocked to the ground and pounced on.
Passers-by then came to his aid and his attackers fled.
Mr Coups said: “I was going home and there were two lads in the road with their backs to me.
“I tooted my horn and they turned around and then I swung out to the right to pass them.
“They said: ‘Nobody toots their horn at us’ and threw a bottle that hit me on the back of the head and knocked my off my bike.
“Then they came over and pulled their T-shirts up over their faces so I could not see them.
“They jumped on my head. I was dazed and couldn’t see what was happening.”
Former trooper Mr Coups spent more than 18 years in the Army and was awarded five service medals after trips to Germany, Brunei, Borneo, Malaysia and Cyprus.
He was on his way home to Bovington from the Wool Royal British Legion club when he was attacked on the main level crossing next to Wool train station at 1am.
Mr Coups remains at Dorset County Hospital, where he is being treated for his injuries.
DC Gerald Marchant of Weymouth CID said he believed Mr Coups’ leg was injured when his moped landed on top of him during the attack last Sunday.
He said: “I would like to hear from anyone who witnessed this incident and in particular any witnesses who came to the aid of the victim.” A 17-year-old was detained and released on police bail while enquiries continue.
DC Marchant can be contacted on 01305 222222.
