A MAN attempted to grab cash being delivered to a bank yesterday.
But he failed to get the cash cassette carrying the money and ran away empty handed, pursued by the security van courier he had tried to rush and two members of the public.
The incident happened outside Barclays Bank in Station Road, New Milton, at noon.
The group pursuing the would-be robber, comprising one of the two couriers, a man in his 30s and another in his 40s, lost sight of him when he reached Whitefield Road.
Police sealed off the area and initially stopped somebody who appeared to match the description given to them, but later said that no arrests had been made.
The man ran off along Parkside Walk into the nearby recreation ground, past the skate park and Methodist Church and on towards Whitefield Road.
G4S Cash Services (UK), formerly Group 4 Securicor, confirmed that neither of its two couriers had been injured.
But the spokesperson said that there was a growing number of violent attacks involving cash in transit.
The would-be robber is described as black, and wearing a light grey hooded top and dark trousers.
Lyndhurst detectives said they did not believe weapons had been used.
• Anyone who witnessed the incident, or thinks they may have seen the man, is urged to contact Lyndhurst CID on 101 or to ring in anonymously on the Crimestoppers charity line at 0800 555 111.
