POOLE Chess Club is celebrating one of its best season's ever, having won an unprecedented five trophies in just eight months.

Members won three of the four Bournemouth and District League Divisions which they entered, and the Handicap Team Knock-out Cup. They also clinched Division 3 of the Dorset League.

The club puts its growing success down to attracting new, young members, especially via chairman Eric Sachs's Junior Chess at Bournemouth Library on Saturday mornings. The club also runs social chess sessions for adult members on Wednesday afternoons at Flirt Café, Bournemouth, which is next door to the library.

"We're proud of the fact that our membership is growing, with new members of all abilities, nationalities and ages made welcome," said Mr Sachs, although the club is hoping to recruit more female members.

Poole Chess Club meets at 7.15pm on Thursday evenings upstairs at the Ex-Servicemen’s Club, 66 North Road, Poole.
