A VAN fire caused disruption for people heading home after the Bank Holiday on the A31.

Firefighters were called to the A31 at St Leonard’s, neat the St Leonard’s Hotel, at 6.15pm on Monday.

Police were forced to close the road in both directions for a time for safety reasons, causing big hold-ups.

The fire was under control by 6.30pm and a fire service spokesman said it started in the van’s engine compartment while the van was in motion and the driver was able to pull over.

The engine compartment was destroyed.
