Bournemouth MPs urged to back tourism
3:00pm Thursday 21st March 2013 in News
A HOTEL chain boss is calling on Bournemouth’s MPs to “stand up and fight for the tourism industry in the House of Commons.”
Travelodge CEO Grant Hearn has written to more than 100 MPs in key tourism destinations including Tobias Ellwood and Conor Burns.
With two hotels in Bournemouth, Mr Hearn is urging them to promote tourism and ensure that the industry thrives on the South Coast.
He said: “The industry needs more than just lip service, as we have huge opportunity within our grasp to help the economy. A lack of action is costing jobs, growth and investment.
“Whilst we dither, our European neighbours and the USA are successfully pursuing growth via forward-thinking tourism strategies.”
Travelodge research has shown visitor numbers to Bournemouth dropped by five per cent from 2007 until 2011.

Yesterday deranged man screaming, gesticulating at customers on terrace at West Beach. Homeless sleeping by House of Fraser. Boscombe & Bournemouth swarming with 'potentially dangerous' dogs ... most in the wrong hands!. Big Issue sellers. Beggars (with their ubiquitious dogs). Alcoholics on the benches by East Cliff hotels. Chewing gum covering payments.
Then the hotels to get their house in order. Train staff properly ... most look disinterested and stand round chatting or chasing their tails! . Update decor and menus (if I see ine more menu with prawn cocktail, melon, portobello mushrooms, goats cheese). Stop hen & parties which must be the no. 1 deterrent... I certainly wouldn't advise friends to visit at weekends!
And it looks as though Travelodge has some work to in 43rd & 56nd position out of 72 on Trip Advisor!!. And their Cooper Dean hotel 4 out of 9 (listed under speciality lodging' which has the wonderful review which just about sums up whats wrong with Bournemouth ... "i was on the 2nd floor, there was so much noise coming from people that were having too much fun, loads of drink everywhere, it smelled of sex and the fire alarm went off at 5am"
