Number of girls arrested down by 75%

THE number of girls arrested in Dorset has fallen by 75 per cent in three years, according to figures released today.

The statistics have been released by campaign group the Howard League for Penal Reform, and the group praised Dorset Police when the figures came to light.

Dorset Police arrested 202 girls aged 17 and under in 2011, compared to 805 in 2008. Chief executive of the league Frances Crook, said: “It is encouraging to see Dorset Police are making fewer arrests of girls than they were in 2008, thanks in part to our effective campaigning.

“A significant fall in the number of children entering the justice system is good news for everyone striving to reduce crime, and saves the taxpayer untold millions.”

She added: “Our evidence shows that the police were arresting girls completely unnecessarily when they were out partying, often with the mistaken intention of protecting them.

“Now the police are handing out flip-flops and helping the girls home, a much more sensible approach.”

Dorset Police is one of 14 forces across the country to record a fall of 50 per cent or more.

Superintendant Garrick Smith of Dorset Police said: “For some young offenders it will remain entirely appropriate to arrest them, but where we can address the offending without bringing them into custody, we will.”

How does this compare to the number of arrested boys in the same time period, and also the number of total arrests? For example, if they arrested 75% less people in all groups, then it's not a fall in real terms....

I agree speedy231278 i would also like to know how many cautions were given as that seems to be the way to keep down arrest figures these days.

Due in the main to this current climate of fear that to punish a woman is socially unacceptable, but far easier is Joe soap with a soft hit on an easy target such as littering.
The soft hits push up the solved crime figures with minimum effort, handling an aggressive 'female involves reams of paperwork so becomes 'unprofitable' to persue.
My, what a wonderfull society we've made.

This is the worst Equality & Diversity statement ever read!? so why cant the men be acted on the same manner?

The police were advised on this matter as full jails and drunken problems were being dealt with in an incorrect manner. Such a huge change can happen, but those wishing to go to far will be arrested I assume?

Very interested if anyone can explain to me in a rational normal manner what this report actually means.

I notice the contentious quotes are not coming from Dorset Police here. Frances Cook's rather odd comments and assumptions make her sound like a seasoned commenter on this pages!
