Dr Robert & PP Arnold - Five in the Afternoon (Curb) ****

A COUPLE of names that have fallen by the wayside in the last few decades hook up with high-grade acid jazzers, one-time Young Disciple Marco Nelson and ex-Galliano drummer Crispin Taylor, and find they've still got the juice. Recorded in Andalusia, the record crackles with a natural warmth.

Built largely around Robert's acoustic guitar and the ultra-relaxed rhythm section, the two voices mingle like old friends on classy struts like I Saw Something and the gospel-flaked congregational closer Satellite. Elsewhere, there's as much country and folk as old school soul and funk - Be My Judge could be a lost Ronnie Lane sketch filled out by Candi Staton. It's this wholesome, holy blend of old and new that should blow your valves. Track this down - and quick!
