I WAS shocked to read in the Echo that David Brown and other helpers recovered 5,000 cigarette butts from a small section of Boscombe Beach (Letters, October 5) and was wondering how long it took to count them all? As we boast of seven miles of sand there must be millions of the blighters buried there.

The logical solution would be to pass a law forcing smokers to confine their smoking to pubs, shops and restaurants instead of polluting open spaces.
