I HAD the need to do a lot of local driving on a particular day – six hours in total.

So to relieve the mind-numbing sensation that this type of driving can cause, I decided to count the number of drivers using mobile phones as it is always a topic of discussion.

The total was six – could be worse.

In my opinion it was bad, as four of those drivers were large van/lorry drivers – professional drivers going about their work.

Now, we don’t want to tar all drivers with the same brush as that would be unjustified, but with the four I saw, their responsibility to other road users and their employers should be questioned.

Obviously they were well aware that they were breaking the law.

I find a thirty-foot vehicle negotiating a major roundabout in the middle of Poole while the driver steers one-handedly and talking on the phone, a little more disturbing than a private car doing the same.

But also they were displaying for all to see their company’s name, telephone number and email address.

Truly ambassadors for their bosses.
