SO A councillor is calling for the piers to be privatised so they can ‘be transformed by privately-owned leisure operators based on the seafront to invest and create jobs.’ I am surprised that this is considered a good plan after the Imax debacle or should I say saga which did not deliver and which it seems the council were powerless to take control of without spending £8.5m.
Yes, bring in organisations to run things well, but with clear deliverables; price constraints ie no increase greater than CPI (see rail fares to support this); quick termination provisions for financial failure or service shortcomings; and no change of control of the underlying business so it cannot be sold on without consent to a party you may not wish to be a business partner with.
Businesses contract to make money and sadly often seem to get the better deals with councils. We need good attractions in the town, but not at any price.
